Mugabe hailed a 'hero' by fellow leaders.

Zimbabwe's ruler Robert Mugabe was yesterday hailed a hero at a gathering of Africa's leaders.

The president made a grand entrance into the conference hall in Sharm el-Sheikh where the African Union was meeting 'hugging pretty much everyone he could get close to', a witness said.

Tanzanian president Jakaya Kikwete congratulated the Zimbabwean people and AU monitors and called the election 'historic'
And president of Gabon, Omar Bongo, said Mr Mugabe had been welcomed as a 'hero'.

He said: 'He was elected, he took an oath, and he is here with us, so he is president and we cannot ask him more.'

Mr Mugabe's re-election unopposed after the opposition Movement for Democratic Change withdrew, claiming violent intimidation by the ruling Zanu-PF party, has been widely condemned in the rest of the world.

Gordon Brown had urged the AU to send a strong call for change in Zimbabwe, but African leaders who have been critical were not present yesterday.

However, the chairman of the AU, Jean Ping, said Africa should 'do everything in its power to help the Zimbabwe parties to work together'.

And South African foreign minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zum said: 'Zanu-PF and the MDC must enter into negotiations which will lead to the formation of a transitional government that can extricate Zimbabwe from its current political challenges.'

Before the meeting, British TV journalist Julian Mannion was manhandled by Mr Mugabe's bodyguards as he attempted to question the 84-year-old president in the foyer.

Last night, Tesco stopped trading with Zimbabwe for the foreseeable future. The supermarket chain sources such food stuffs as mange tout, broccoli and sugar snap peas from the country. The trade involves up to 4,000 workers and is worth £1million a year.

Tesco has been under pressure to withdraw from trading.

It said it would reopen trade only once an 'internationally-recognised' government returned

Penye ukweli uongo ujitenga. Mungu awazidishie hekima wale wote wanaosimamia wanyonge kwa moyo wao wote, na sio kusimamia wanyonge kwa ajili ya 'kuadvance hidden interests'.
