It's been a while since I've posted anything in the international forum. Mostly because for some reason almost every thread finds a way of turning into a war of words between Tanzanians and Kenyans. ANyway hopefully this topic will bring us together in discussion for a change.

Now when I say Westernization I mean culturally in terms of human interaction and not tall skyscrapers and flyover roads. I say this because we see that even though the West is "modernized" it has come with some price especially culturally. Some of the cultural impact the West's modernization has had are but not limited to
a)Death of the extended family. A person is only responsible for those living under his/her house. This is why we see old folks being taken to nursing homes and being left they to be cared to by strangers sometimes w/out any visits from family members.

b)Public acceptance of homosexuality to the extent that now they get married in churches.

    c)High crime rates

d)Too many laws to the extent that anybody can be sued for anything. Sometimes you can even get sued for doing the right thing.

The question is can Africa modernize while still keeping our own culture? We are hardly out of an agriculture based economy and we are already seeing some elements of the negative impacts of Westernization in our own countries. Now don't get me wrong, the Western culture has it's good points as well. Like any other culture it has both good and bad side affects. Problem is we seem to only be imitating the bad.

So the question I pose to you is.........Is modernization possible w/out Westernization?

its possible if we would have decided another way, socialism liek what happen in cuba or china years back, though you need to be crazzy enough to tell our fellow africans that we should go back to socialism and agree though it is the only way out, capitalism with its culture has no future, its like a pyramid scheme! i am glad south american country have realised the hardway now and they are turning back to socialism the likes of venezuela, bolivia, with the current trend south east asia will be next to turn back to socialism.

the simple fact of the matter is you can not have two things at the same time, you can not embrace capitalism without cultural destruction and hardship in the end with a lot of promising future in the beginning similarly you can not have socialism without hardship at the initial stage

The big question should be, where did modernization begin from? was it in the west or in the east?

I have to ask, what are these 'bad side effects' which Africans are imitating from the West?

The problem is for Africans civilization means behaving like westerners. That is also, is colonial mentality.

Certainly. In fact it is the West that needs to adopt the cultural pluses we have.

Only possible if the residents themselves start to act upon it
