Nyerere was from a different age, pick up any of his speech and you will find what may have been acceptable then but totally inappropriate and politically incorrect today, and I am not talking about policy issues, just delivery. Especially his later speeches. The man ended up being too comfortable knowing he had the country by the grip and there was nobody to check him, this quality would not pass any decent board of education's standards. He also developed the habit of not using prepared speeches which rendered his speeches more impromptu and not screened, an important aspect of public speaking.

I would not want schoolchildren to be inculcated with a cult of personality and lower their bars to the standards of the Nyereres of this world.

The only reason Nyerere seemed so bright back then was because most of us were really young and the old folks were oppressed.

Spare the cult of personality, even the Chinese are doing away with the Mao cult.

Acha kuendelea kuungopea umma. Umeshasoma mkusanyiko wa hotuba zake mpya katika 'Africa Today and Tomorrow'? Pundit usitoe madai ambayo hayana uthibitisho!

Nyerere's 1991 INTERVIEW WITH ANA CAMACHO OF EL PAIS, MADRID

QUOTE: “Our first recommendation (in the Report of the South Commission) is that if African countries want to develop in freedom, they must first put their own people, their own money and their own resources to maximum use. Another problem is that when our countries talk of external cooperation partnerships, they only think of the North. They never consider the possibility of South–South cooperation, say between Southern Africa and Latin America.”

COMMENT: In 1995, four years after the above interview, Nyerere and the highly respected Tanzanian permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, Amir Jamal, successfully negotiated with the Swiss authorities the establishment of the South Centre in that city. The main goal of this unique inter-governmental institution was to promote solidarity and cooperation among all the countries of the South and to strengthen their collective presence in the economic and commercial arenas of the UN. As the South Centre's first executive director, Mwalimu chose India's ManMohan Singh, now prime minister of his country.

If the never-ending, never-completed Doha Development Round concocted by the World Trade Organization, also based in Geneva, has achieved anything, it is surely the opportunity to teach the South some very important lessons about the North–South gap or abyss. Since the Doha exercise began in 2001, the emergent, the developing and the very poor members of the South have seen at first-hand – and under laboratory conditions– the importance of the expert advice and analysis available at their own centre in order to face the Northern bulldozers disguised as “trade talks and development rounds”.

And today, at this moment of writing, the leading countries of the South – China, India, Brazil, South Africa and Venezuela – have at last got their act together to put into place some of the concrete forms of South–South cooperation that Nyerere talked of years ago.

QUOTE: "Yes, now we see the birth of a new god, one called capitalism which supposedly has all the answers” and “At present we are living a moment of deception. But the conditions being created on the ground by this euphoria over capitalism gives me reason to believe that, in about 10 years or so, the ideal of socialism will return. And more forcefully than before.”

COMMENT: It is difficult, this side of the worst crisis since 1929, or this side of the banking binge, to be more precise, to recall the gross, self-congratulatory triumphalism that gripped the mind of so many citizens and leaders when the Soviet Union collapsed and the Berlin Wall was brought down in 1989. Some very bizarre exaggerations were invented to promote the theory that three saints, Reagan, Thatcher and Milton Friedman held up the capitalist sky over all our heads for which we should be eternally grateful. And in any case, there was no alternative…

Two years later, in 1991, Nyerere tells the Madrid journalist not to get carried away and even more, not to believe that the purpose is General Motors. He then goes on to point out that unregulated bouts of over-indulgence will inevitably lead to severe hangovers in about 10 years or so. And then what some call a mistake, that is, the ideal of a just society, socialism, will be back. And perhaps he is right.

QUOTE: “I belong to a dying breed, one that resists reneging on its own ideals.”

COMMENT: This is pure Mwalimu, laughing quietly at himself, using self-deprecating but gentle irony to drive home a very unpopular point in 1991, namely that history never ends, it only repeats itself. And that it is better to stand firm by your beliefs, if you have beliefs, and not to follow the herd and not to deny reality. And that has nothing to do with ideology.

Msitake kuturudisha kwenye "fikra sahihi" (sahihi my ass) za mwenyekiti or whatever the hell it was.

Acha longolongo! Wenzetu wepi? Wachina? Wao wanasoma historia ya Mao na the great leap na ndio inawasaidia waendelee? Au Wajapani? Hao wanasoma historia ya Samurai na Meiji Revolution and they are building from there - from something. Mitanzania tunataka kuanzia from nowhere and go nowhere hence we end staying nowhere! Pundits give us a break!

Muulize Kabula atakuambia!

Nimekuambia muulize Kabula, akiamka asubuhi atakuambia. Alafu muulize kama anaijua 'Letter from Birmingham Jail'. Akikijibu ndio, muulize ameijuaje!

Drafted by Thomas Jefferson between June 11 and June 28, 1776, the Declaration of Independence is at once the nation's most cherished symbol of liberty and Jefferson's most enduring monument. Here, in exalted and unforgettable phrases, Jefferson expressed the convictions in the minds and hearts of the American people. The political philosophy of the Declaration was not new; its ideals of individual liberty had already been expressed by John Locke and the Continental philosophers. What Jefferson did was to summarize this philosophy in "self-evident truths" and set forth a list of grievances against the King in order to justify before the world the breaking of ties between the colonies and the mother country. We invite you to read a transcription of the complete text of the Declaration.

Drafted by Julius Nyerere between January and February 1967, the Arusha Declaration is at once the nation's most cherished symbol of Freedom and Nyerere's most enduring monument. Here, in exalted and unforgettable phrases, Nyerere expressed the convictions in the minds and hearts of the Tanzanian people. The political philosophy of the Declaration was not new; its ideals of socialism and self-reliance had already been expressed by Kinjeketile Ngwale and the African philosophers. What Nyerere did was to summarize this philosophy in "self-evident truths" and set forth a list of grievances against neocolonialism, capitalism and imperialism in order to justify before the world the breaking of ties between the Tanzania and the imperial world. We invite you to read a transcription of the complete text of the Declaration.

The Arusha Declaration has to - and should - be taught in all our schools and colleges!

Worse still, Nyerere mwenyewe kama Fabian intellectual hakupenda kujikuza openly hivyo, bali alikuwa mtu wa kupenda ideas zaidi, sasa kusema tufundishe indoctrination ya cult of personality ni kui reduce legacy yake ambayo iko debatable anyway.

Mwalimu tunaye tu.

    Africa's Place in the World

Peace, Unity and People-Centred Development in Africa

Africa Approaches the Twenty First Century

    African Unity and Independence

    A New Africa

    Education and Development in Africa

    Africa Today and Tomorrow

Collective Self-Reliance: Africa's Only Future Hope

    Peace, Unity and Justice

Education for Service and Not for Selfishness

The Debts of Highly Indebted Poor Countries Should be Cancelled

Ex-president of Tanzania Benjamin Mkapa nicely summed up his experience and that of many other countries: "We privatized everything the state had. Everything was bought by foreign capital because we had no national capital to compete. The foreign companies almost always closed local businesses, which were not competitive, transforming them into distributors of foreign products and driving up unemployment. The experts of the World Bank and the IMF predicted that this would happen, but they told us: Now the influx of foreign investment will lead to the creation of new, competitive and technologically current businesses that will provide the foundations for a lasting, modern development. None of this happened for us."
