SHE'S famous for bringing sex appeal to the US presidential race.

But it's not the first time sassy Sarah Palin has set out to wow the public, as our exclusive pictures show.

Here is John McCain's Republican running mate showing off her curves in a saucy red Baywatch-style swimsuit.

She was just 20 and known by maiden name Sarah Heath when she did her Pamela Anderson impression during the 1984 Miss Alaska contest.

Sweet

One spectator at the show recalled: "Sarah had a figure to die for and when she came out in that swimsuit nobody could take their eyes off her.

"It's no wonder that John McCain picked her as his deputy. Who wouldn't want Sarah working alongside them looking like that?"

Sarah, now a 44-year-old mother-of-five, also wowed the judges in a glittering blue gown and played a tune called The Homecoming on the flute in the contest's talent section.

Sarah, who represented her home town as Miss Wasilla, had to settle for a runner-up place. But she was voted Miss Congeniality as the most popular girl among the 16 finalists.

Fellow contestant Pamela Massey recalled: "Sarah was very likeable and sweet. Everybody got on with her and there was no doubt she was going to be Miss Congeniality.

"But there was no way anyone could have guessed she would one day be in a position to become vice-president of the United States."

Pamela added: "Sarah wrote a lovely message on my programme which read, ‘Pam, you're a great, talented girl! I'm so glad we met this week. God Bless, Sarah.' "

The official programme for the event in the state's capital Anchorage revealed Sarah wanted to follow a career in TV.

And in video footage of the contest an off-screen announcer is heard saying: "Contestant Number 8, Sarah Heath. Sarah says she wants to prepare for a career in television broadcasting by majoring in Telecommunications and Political Science."

PRESIDENTIAL hopefuls McCain and Barack Obama squared up to each other in their first crucial TV debate yesterday, watched by millions of Americans. Snap polls suggested Obama just edged a close encounter.
