An outbreak of the deadly hepatitis B has been reported by health officials in Kasese district.

The disease causes inflammation of the liver and destroys its capacity to perform its functions in the body.

The district disease surveillance officer, Ericana Bwambale said one case of hepatitis B in a family can be considered an outbreak because it’s so contagious.

He said the rate at which people are testing positive for the disease is alarming with the prevalence rate at 11%.

Hepatitis B is an infectious hepatitis caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV).

The ministry of health currently vaccinates children under five years against the disease and hepatitis B has been taken up as one of the immunisable diseases among children in Uganda.
