The National Institute of Health Research (NIMR) Director General, Dr Mwele Ntuli Malecela, has become the first Tanzanian to serve in the Executive Board of the International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI).

According to a statement, Dr Malecela was elected at the Annual General Meeting held towards the end of last September, in Helsinki, Finland.

The IANPHI Executive Board provides policy oversight from respected leaders of national public health institutes from around the world and is funded by a generous grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to support research activities in public health among member countries.

Commenting in an exclusive interview with the ‘Daily News' soon after her return home over the weekend, Dr Malecela emphasized on the need for new members of IANPHI Executive Board to build ties in institutional strengthening, research
capacity building and promote translation of research into action.


She said through IANPHI,
Tanzania would benefit from supports through collaborative researches on non-communicable (NCDs) diseases, where surveillance system for risk factors would be given priority in various districts, such as Temeke and Rungwe.


"Our institution has recently benefited from a long-term grant from IANPHI, which was used to build NCD office at NIMR. It is also supporting mentoring of NIMR scientists through various programmes offered by IANPHI," she elaborated.


Dr Malecela joins a team of five new members for IANPHI's policy-making board.

Other members include Reinhard Burger, President of Germany's Robert Koch Institute; Rajae El Aouad, Director of Morocco's National Institute of Hygiene; David Butler-Jones, Director of Canada's Public Health Agency; and Justin McCracken, Chief Executive of the United Kingdom's Health Protection Agency.


IANPHI board members share a belief in the importance of building broader and deeper public health capacity and infrastructure through strong and connected national public health institutes.


The association is a global partnership that aims at developing stronger and more coordinated public health systems to help prevent and respond to public health threats.


Dr Malecela who is also
Tanzania's Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination Programme Director is known for her initiatives in promoting health research activities. S

he has also facilitated the Tanzania National Health Research Priority Setting process in 1999 and its revision in 2005.

IANPHI was chartered in 2006 and has currently linked national public health institutes from 74 member countries which together, promoted worldwide cooperation to improve health and save lives.
