The Commission of the African Union invites applicants who are citizens of Member States for the post of HEAD OF THEMEDICAL LABORATORY:

1. Post:

Job Title: Head of The Medical Laboratory
Grade: P4
Department: Department for Medical Services
ImmediateSupervisor: Head of Division Medical Services
Duty station: Addis Ababa


2. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of The Head of Division MedicalServices, the Head of The Medical Laboratory at the AU Medical Services will beresponsible for the day to day running of the laboratory as follows:

i. Purchase and install the most reliable technologies equipment and institute the best quality control that will improve the Laboratory performance.
ii. Ensure that the Laboratory delivers quality health care to its customers.
iii. Be able to operate the laboratory equipment and means of maintaining them,
iv. Daily laboratory quality control system monitoring, laboratory results data interpretation and release of results to the physicians,
v. Capable of developing the Standard Operating Procedures.
vi. Toidentify the training needs of the laboratory staff, to conduct in house training and search for training attachments overseas where such technologies are available.
vii. Contribute to the evaluation and development of technical strategy of the laboratory and other units towards quality health care deliver.
viii. Planning, budgeting and monitoring of all laboratory programs as stipulated.
ix. Manage, develop direct staff reporting and control the Units expenditure within
agreed limit.
x. To prepare update laboratory reports inline with progress made in the fields.
xi. Participate and encourage your subordinates to attend CME.
xii. Identify the training needs of the Laboratory Staff, to conduct in house training and search for training attachments
xiii. To perform any other duties that may be assigned by the immediate supervisor.

3. Qualifications and Experience Required:

· Must have MD or MBBS University degree;
· Must specialize in one of theLaboratory specialties he/she is going to supervise.
· Relevant work experience within a government hospital, private practice, university medical services or international organization as unit, team, section, or UnitHead;


4. Professional experience required:

At least 10 years of service as aregistered physician/Laboratory Medicine Specialist of which 3 years should be at laboratory managerial level;

5. Other Relevant Skills:
· Must be computer literate;
· Must be conversant with laboratory Operating Systems.
· Involvementas team leader in the organization of continuous medical education will be an asset;
· Working knowledge of policy analysis and development and program/project management, implementation and monitoring;
· Management experience, excellent interpersonal skills, ability to organize and motivate others, and to work in a multi-cultural environment;
· Excellent drafting and reporting skills;
· Good communication and negotiation skills;
· Good planning and organizational skills.

6. Language Requirement:

Proficiencyin one of the African Union working language. Knowledge of other working languages would be an added advantage.

7. Age Requirement:
Candidatesshould preferably be between 35 and 50years old.


8. Tenureof Appointment:
The appointment will be made on a fixed term contract for a period of thee (3)years, of which the first twelve months will be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract shall be a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance and deliverables.

10. RENUMERATION:

Indicative basic salary of US$ 38,489.00 per annum plus other related entitlements e.g. Post adjustment (46% of basic salary), Housing allowance ($16,819.20 perannum), education allowance (75% of tuition and other education related expenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$7,800.00 per child perannum), etc for internationally recruited staff of the Commission.
