The difference is no longer relevant because HD-DVD is now officially discontinued. I remember there was big war between the two. However, for historical purpose Blu-ray and HD-DVD are two major High Definition disc formats that were vying to replace the current DVD standard. HD-DVD (now discontinued from 2008) was a direct competitor of Blu-ray for two years. In terms of technology, Blu-ray and HD-DVD both utilize Blue Laser and sophisticated video compression to achieve high definition video playback on the same size disc as a standard DVD. However, neither format is compatible with the other. For more info check out this: Blu-ray and HD-DVD - What You Need To Know About The Blu-Ray and HD-DVD High Definition DVD Formats
