We have a situation where armed people went into Tanzanian villages, threw the people off their land, and started digging for gold. That was done with the full support of the CCM government. In fact, the government supplied the said armed thugs. According to Lisu, Mrema and a few others, some of the villagers resisted and were simply shot dead.

So, they started this gold mining thing. Currently, they annually remove, from the same villages, gold that is worth about $1.0 billion. You would think that they would be reasonable enough to give at least half that amount to Tanzania, but they do not. Last year, they simply gave $27 million to the government an some unspecified amount as kickbacks to CCM officials.

No matter how you look at it, it is armed robbery! Why is JK unwilling to suspend the armed robbery operations while his officials negotiate some less offensive arrangement? Is it the armed robbers that he fears, or are his colleagues in the ruling party putting pressure on him? Does he have vested interests in maintaining the statusquo?

Be that as it may, but I feel that it is time the people treated these armed robbers as they would any others.

Nimepewa habari toka ndani ya kikao kuwa hii report itakabidhiwa "rasmi" kwa Kikwete mwisho wa mwezi huu.

Ninavuta subira kidogo ili niwe miongoni mwa "wataoshuhudia" kwa mara nyingine tena na tena kama kikwete ni part ya hii problem au anafanya juhudi za kujitoa ili kufanya kazi kwa uaminifu na utii wa katiba kama alivyoapa!

A coupe of days back a group of armed robbers arrested some villagers and imprisoned them in the robber's quarters. Valiantly, the villagers fought back. They torched one of the houses and freed their own. Tragically, the government is on the side of the robbers. It was the government that assisted the robbers in seizing the village land, by force.

We really are a peace loving people! The villagers should have torched all the houses and chased the robbers from their land. If the village wishes to mine what is in its ground by using hoes, so be it!

What kind of government allows armed "investors" (robbers, really) to imprison its citizens? It must be a government of the robbers, for the robbers and by the robbers.

Irate villagers fight it out with miner`s security guards

Fighting between security guards of Amazon mining company and people has erupted in Kigwase Village, Korogwe District, Tanga Region with the guards said to have used live bullets.

A house belonging to the company's manager was set on fire as angry villagers invaded the mining company`s camp in an attempt to have two of their fellow villagers, who had been arrested and locked up in the camp, released, according to reports from the scene.

The incident occurred last week when the company`s security guards apprehended two villagers who were reportedly found prospecting on the company`s compound illegally.

Speaking to PST, Kigwase local government leader Augustino Yustino said the situation became tense, forcing village authorities to solicit police assistance to calm down tempers by the angry villagers.

Yustino said the fighting started after the villagers received information on the arrests by the security men. The company was allegedly planning to take the villagers to court.

``The security guards ignored the request by wananchi to set the villagers free, upon which the villagers mobilised themselves and ambushed the company's camp to rescue their colleagues,`` Yustino said.

``As the fighting was going on, the security guards fired in the air in an unsuccessful attempt to disperse the villagers. It is at this point that local government leaders intervened,`` he said.

After failing to bring peace during the fracas, local government authorities had to communicate with Tanga regional police commander and Korogwe district police commander, who sent police units which ultimately managed to bring the situation under control.

The village leader dismissed allegations that the village authorities were siding with the investor for failure to solve the long-standing and frequent problem, which had already resulted in the killing of some villagers.

Instead Yustino passed on the blame to district authorities for failure to restrain the investor from mistreating the villagers, including arbitrary arrests, beating up and locking them up in the company`s cells.

According to documented reports, more than five people have so far been shot dead by the company`s security guards during past similar incidents.

Last year a similar crisis called for the intervention of the Field Force Unit (FFU) when wananchi rose up against the investor`s alleged exploitative and discriminatory practices.

Is this thing of trigger happy guards arresting villagers, for “trespassing” on the villagers’ own land, not a whole lot more interesting to you, and even to Mzee Mwanakijiji?
