Hamad gives condition for recognising Isles President Aman Karume

    By Mwinyi Sadallah, Zanzibar

The Civic United Front (CUF) secretary-general, Seif Sheriff Hamad, says he is ready to recognise President Amani Abeid karume if the latter is ready to form a power-sharing government in Zanzibar.

Hamad issued the statement yesterday here when he talked to the press shortly after addressing a public rally at Makunduchi Village in Kusini Unguja Region.

``I will be ready to recognise him (Karume) if he announces that he is ready to form a government of national unity,`` he said.

Hamad?s declaration comes a few weeks after a call by Karume that he would meet the CUF secretary-general if he recognised him as the President of Zanzibar.

Hamad denounced Karume`s presidency after the 2005 general elections, citing irregularities in the registration and voting process.

Addressing the public rally earlier, Hamad insisted that his party would not go back to the negotiating table following the decision by the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi to postpone the signing of the accord and instead making fresh demands for a referendum on the matter.

He blamed the Union government for the stalled peace talks between the two parties, but called on Zanzibaris to strengthen unity among them and avoid any unnecessary divisions for the betterment of their nation.

Regarding the present power problems in Zanzibar, Hamad said he was surprised that the government has failed to restore the essential service for weeks now.

He blamed Union government leaders for remaining silent on such an important issue, taking into account that power supplied in Zanzibar was generated on the Mainland.

The CUF deputy secretary, Juma Duni Haji, blamed the Zanzibar government for what he described as its failure to uplift the level of education in the isles.
