A junior AIM-listed coal exploration company with exploration licences in Southern Africa is seeking a Geological Database Manager and GIS specialist to manage these activities in-country. The role will be based at the company’s exploration camp and will operate on a 6/2 roster.

The candidate will be expected to collate all data relating to the exploration activities and to ensure that this is captured into the geological database. This involves regular interaction with the project geologists, geophysical loggers and senior staff so as to guarantee that all data is collected in a timely and accurate manner.

The successful applicant will also be responsible for the presentation of all GIS related information and the production of maps, plans and cross sections as required. As Database Manager, you will also be expected to regularly liaise with external consultants in order to provide them with all relevant information. It is also necessary to prepare data for internal purposes on a daily operational basis, as well as for reporting.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Degree in geology or other earth science related discipline;

A minimum of 3-5 years experience in the mining and/or exploration industries with direct exposure and a sound understanding of all aspects of coal exploration;

Experience working with or managing geological databases. Knowledge of SQL and acQuire GIMS would be a distinct advantage;

A focussed ability to be able to process large amounts of data, conduct QA/QC procedures and manage the data in an effective and logical manner;

GIS experience, preferably MapInfo Discover;

A familiarisation with resource modelling and Gemcom Minex would be an advantage;

A comprehensive understanding of the various types of exploration data including geological logging, down hole geophysics, geotechnical logging, coal sampling and lab analyses;

Excellent communication and analytical skills and strong attention to detail;

Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; and

An ability to work as part of a dynamic team in a fast paced environment


This is a permanent position on a FIFO basis and offers a competitive remuneration package.
