Zambia police late Monday arrested and detained a former Communications and Transport minister Dora Siliya over a radar installation deal.

Joint government investigative team spokesperson Charity Munganga-Chanda said in Lusaka that Ms Siliya had been arrested and charged with abuse of authority of office.

The deal was cancelled in December 2008.

"In the first count, she is alleged to have directed the cancellation of a duly awarded tender for the supply, delivery, installation and commissioning of the Zambia Air Traffic Management Surveillance Radar System to Thales Air System SA," Ms Munganga-Chanda told journalists Monday.

"In the second count, Hon Siliya is alleged to have accepted a free offer from Selex Sistemi Integrati S.P.A for the repair of a radar head at the then Lusaka International Airport (now Kenneth Kaunda Airport) without following procedure."

Ms Munganga-Chanda said, as result of this free offer, the government lost $368,309 (K1,943,932,360.00).

Ms Siliya is expected to appear in court Tuesday.

Ms Siliya and former President Rupiah Banda's son Henry have also been linked to the controversial Cayman Island-registered company RP Capital.
