From PETER TEMBA in Moshi, 21st March 2010 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 92 PRELIMINARY hearing of a criminal case faced by two senior officials with Moshi Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (MUWSA), who are charged with two counts of abuse of power, will be held on April 28, this year. The accused persons, Anthony Solomon Kasonta and John Florian Ndetico, who are MUWSA's Managing Director and Acting Finance and Administration Manager, respectively, were arraigned on February 9, this year, before Resident Magistrate Gabriel Shayo charged with the alleged offence. Prosecutors from the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in Kilimanjaro Region, Mr Melchisedek Gunda and Maghela Ndimbo, alleged in court that the accused did intentionally abuse their positions. The two allegedly approved payment in respect of a fictitious study tour to Dar es Salaam for purpose of obtaining an undue advantage in favour of Witness Shoo and Rehema Wilson who were allegedly paid 310,000/- each. In the second count, the two are alleged to have committed a similar offence on July 4, 2007, by approving payment in respect of a fictitious tour to Dodoma by Samwel Millu and Siael Lyamuya. They allegedly paid 290,000/- to each. A third person, Anna Maurice, was paid 292,000/-. The accused allegedly took advantage of the payments in their favour. The accused persons entered a plea of 'not guilty' and they are out on bail after signing a 1.5m/- bail bond with two sureties each with the same amount. They also tendered in court documents showing immovable property that belonged to them. The accused are defended by two advocates, Mr Godwin Sandi and Elizabeth Minde. IS THIS TYPE OF CASES THAT PCCB ARE ONLY ABLE TO INVESTIGATE AND BRING THE CONCERNED TO COURT? HOW ABOUT THE BIG CASES THAT THREATENS THE COUNTRY ECONOMY? WHAT IS HAPPENING? CAN'T WE HAVE ANOTHER BODY THAT IS ABLE TO DEAL WITH BIGGER CASES BY TAKING EXAMPLE OF SFO OF THE UK?
