Five people were killed after hundreds of people raided African Barrick Gold's (ABGL.L) North Mara gold mine in Tanzania in the third attack in a week, a senior police officer said on Tuesday.
The mine, located in Tarime district about 100 km (60 miles) east of Lake Victoria, suspended operations temporarily during the raid to steal gold ore, but resumed production after calm was restored.
"Between 800 and 1,200 people armed with traditional weapons invaded the mine at around 5 a.m. (0200 GMT) on Monday with the intention of stealing gold ore from one of the crushers," Tarime-Rorya regional police commander, Constantine Massawe, told Reuters by telephone.
"Police fired warning shots into the air and used tear gas to try to stop the attackers from advancing but they would not heed. Police were forced to use live ammunition to protect themselves. Ten people, including seven police officers, were injured in the incident," he said.
A spokesman for African Barrick Gold, a unit of the world's largest miner Barrick Gold Corp (ABX.TO), in Tanzania confirmed the attack, but declined further comment.
Massawe said three suspects injured in the mine invasion were in police custody.
"There have been two other attacks on the mine over the past one week, but security personnel at the mine, with the help of police officers, managed to keep the invaders at bay," he said.
North Mara gold mine, which consists of four open pits, has experienced several attacks over the past few years.
In 2008, some 200 people attacked it and destroyed property worth $7 million, forcing operations at one pit to be halted.
African Barrick Gold said in December it aimed to build an underground operation beneath existing open pits after finding more gold at the North Mara mine.
In 2009, North Mara produced some 212,000 ounces of gold at a cash cost of $508 per ounce.
ABG said it wants to boost output at its Tanzanian operations to one million ounces a year over the next three years.
The gold miner, which floated in London in March 2010, expects to produce 700,000-760,000 ounces of gold in 2011.
