“When I am at home in Zanzibar, I feel happy to learn that some of the students who have acquired scholarships to study at the University of Zanzibar are girls from this school,” said Mwinyi in soft spoken voice.
In his speech, Director of Islamic Centres Administration and Zakat Fund, Muhammad Osman commended the former president for choosing to visit the school as part of spending his morning time during the national Ijitima prayers where among others, he decided to encourage the Muslim girls on the importance of education.
He also told the former president and his entourage that results at the girls’ Muslim secondary school were encouraging thereby requesting for more donors to support the girls’ tertiary education.
The Principal of the school, Muhammad Hassan then presented gifts to the former president of Tanzania.
Mai Halima Girls secondary school was opened in 2006. Similar girls’ secondary schools have also been constructed in Mangochi and Zomba (Domasi) under the Moslem Association of Malawi (MAM).
