Barcelona president Joan Laporta claims that Manchester City have made a ''stratospheric'' offer to sign Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o.

Speculation has been rife about where Eto'o will be next season as, with his contract set to expire next summer, Barca were keen to either tie him to a new deal or cash in on the Cameroon striker.

Reports suggest the Catalan giants have accepted a 30m euro bid from City and Laporta believes the temptation of a mega salary would prove too much for Eto'o.

''Eto'o has a stratospheric offer from City, which would convert him into the best paid player in the world,'' he told Catalan radio station iCat FM. ''It's starting to become clear that he has this monster offer.

''He wants to stay but an offer like this is very difficult to refuse. If Eto'o accepts this stratospheric offer we will have to bring in someone.''

Eto'o contributed 36 goals last season as Barca claimed an unprecedented Primera Division, Copa del Rey and Champions League treble.

Should the 28-year-old leave the Nou Camp, Barca would likely step up their efforts to land Spain and Valencia striker David Villa.

City won't be held to ransom over Eto'o 28/06/2009 10:26

The papers are confident Carlos Tevez will cross town to the City of Manchester Stadium some time this week, and most expect Samuel Eto'o to leave Barcelona and join him - but there may yet be a hitch, warns knowledgeable Manchester-based writer Simon Mullock ...

    Sunday Mirror

"City keen on Eto'o - but not £40million price tag"

Manchester City are threatening to pull the plug on their bid to bring Samuel Eto'o to Eastlands unless Barcelona slash their £40million asking price.

The Blues have been encouraged to make a move for the Cameroon international by the European champions - despite Barca's claim that they are now ready to open talks about a new contract with Eto'o - but have been stunned by the inflated transfer fee.

Eto'o's £200,000-a-week wage demands have not surprised City's Abu Dhabi-based backers. But City have made it clear that Barcelona's valuation is double what they are prepared to pay for a player who has only one year left on his contract.

Moneybags City know that the trillion-dollar wealth of owner Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Nahyan and the club's lack of Champions League status means they will have to pay over-the-top prices for stellar names as they build a team to challenge at the top level. But when a delegation from City met Barcelona officials last week they were stunned by the bounty placed on Eto'o's head.

The message delivered to the Catalan club was that City's desire to sign Eto'o has not descended into desperation - and that they would not be paying a fee that would enable Barcelona to finance their own plans to strengthen.

City are hoping the reported interest from Inter Milan in the 28-year-old striker is nothing more than a ploy to force up the price.

The Eastlands club hoped to begin the process of tying up deals for Eto'o and Carlos Tevez when manager Mark Hughes returns from a family holiday tomorrow.

Tevez is expected to complete a £30m switch across Manchester on Wednesday after snubbing United's attempts to sign him permanently following a two-year loan spell at Old Trafford.

Hughes will also look towards strengthening his defensive options, with Everton's Joleon Lescott and Arsenal's Kolo Toure his preferred targets.

But City will not be bidding for Inter Milan right-back Maicon - despite claims from the Brazilian's agent that they have lodged an interest.

Everton are demanding £20m for England international Lescott - a price that has again been inflated by City's status as the world's richest club as much as the three years left on the defender's contract.

And it will cost £12m to tempt Arsenal into selling Toure, a City target since January.

Hughes will look to recoup some cash by selling bigmoney signings Jo and Elano, as well as club captain Richard Dunne.

Jo and Elano are being monitored by Fulham and Inter Milan respectively, while Dunne will tie up a £5m switch to Sunderland after being targeted by new Black Cats boss Steve Bruce.

    Laporta: "Eto'o has a stratospheric offer"www.fcbarcelona.cat

Barcelona chairman Joan Laporta admits that the Cameroon striker has "a stratospheric offer from another team, which would make him into the best-paid player in the world". Nevertheless, Laporta would like Eto'o to stay at Barça.

This Saturday in an interview with radio programme ‘Tarda Tardà' on Icat FM, Barcelona chairman Joan Laporta spoke about his taste in music but also had time to look at the latest first team news.

    Bid for Eto'o

Laporta said that he believes "Samuel Eto'o wants to stay and I'd like him to" but the player has received "a stratospheric offer from another team, which would make him into the best-paid player in the world". He also pointed out that if the Cameroon striker stays and Barça end up signing David Villa, the two players would be "compatible" as "the season is long".

    Keirrison and Luis Filipe

Another name linked with Barça this week has been Keirrison. Laporta announced that his signing for Barça is on the point of being completed.

Turning to Deportivo de la Coruña's full-back, Luis Filipe, Laporta said that if Lendoiro asks for €20 million for the player "then I'll make no effort to get him. He's out of the market there".

    Waiting for Ribéry

Laporta was full of praise for Bayern Munich's Franck Ribéry: "We like him a lot. Bayern knows that and he does too. We also know Madrid are after him, but Beckenbauer isn't selling. However, if they change their minds they know we're interested". Given the fact that other clubs are looking to sign the Frenchman, Laporta made it clear that "we won't get into an auction over him".

    Praise for Messi

Laporta was full of praise for one of Barcelona's top stars, Leo Messi. "He's the best there's ever been, Barça's ‘Messiah'," said the club chairman. Another name to come up in the conversation was Mascherano, a great friend of Leo Messi's and one of the other players Barça have been interested in. "We have the best midfield, but Touré and Keita will be off to the African Cup of Nations," noted Laporta.
Taste in music‘Tarda Tardà', presented by the music expert Jordi Tardà, is one of the best programmes around for rock lovers. During their conversation, Joan Laporta revealed his taste in music: "Music can help you to overcome situations and grow as a person... music tames the beast". His favourite singers include Bruce Springsteen and Catalan artist Joan Manel Serrat.
