African Summit Hears Dire Economic Forecasts
    By Peter Heinlein
    Addis Ababa
    03 February 2009

African leaders meeting in Addis Ababa, Tuesday, have heard a series of grim economic forecasts for the continent and pledges by international financial institutions to dramatically increase lending to ease the expected pain. A debate at the AU summit on the deepening financial crisis was held in an atmosphere of uncertainty about how to address it.

Ethiopia Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, set the tone for the day's debate, predicting a continental disaster unless action is taken quickly.

"Our economic prospects are such that unless we act, and act now and decisively, the majority of African states could become failed states over the coming decade," said Meles Zenawi. "The consequences of such an outcome are dire."

There was little optimism in the summit hall, but there was general agreement that Africa could be the worst victim of a crisis not of its own making.

"African countries did not create the situation that the world is having to deal with today," said Obi Ezekwesili. "However, Africa is not a far-flung continent different from the rest of the continents of the world. Therefore, it has to ultimately get the impact of the contagion effect we have seen."

Ezekwesili told the assembled leaders that the world has changed and warned that they have to be ready to change with it.

"It is clear we are in a new world and, therefore, the way we act and the way we respond cannot be the traditional way we have always known," she said. "Something has to change. And the people who can make the change happen for Africa are right within the room."

But some in the audience seemed to reject Ezekwesili's advice.

Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe, who has presided over the destruction of his country's once powerful economy, continues to blame Zimbabwe's woes on a campaign of Western revenge.

"The cause of our condemnation, isolation is because my government took the necessary measures to create the conditions for equal opportunities for decolonization, for creating conditions in which our people would regain their lost resources and have access to the means of production," said Robert Mugabe. "We believe these illegal sanctions are not only unjustified and cruel, but they have led to the needless suffering and foreign-induced polarization of the people of Zimbabwe."

Loans are not an option for Mr. Mugabe, whose country is under economic sanctions. But for most others, lending seems to be a critical short-term option. African Development Bank President Donald Kaberuka told the summit that the bank would triple its lending to the continent to help soften the blow of a crisis many fear is still in its early stages.

It’s time for Africa to stop depending on so called ‘loans’ from the western world. It’s sad that out of all leaders who were at the summit and no one couldn’t come up with ways for Africa survive this financial crisis without depending on the western world to bail them out on everything.

Why can’t we improve on agriculture, we have land for it; what about better control of our natural resources. Michezo ya kuibiwa diamond, gold, tanzanite, etc iishe. Na hao viongozi need to stop being so selfish and greedy and start thinking about the people of Africa.

Mtaiba mpaka lini jamani, think about the future generations, what are you leaving for them????Come on African Presidents…Please do what you are suppose to do. BE INDEPENDENT AND STOP DEPENDING ON THESE SO CALLED LOANS FROM THE WESTERN WORLD.

Hapa hapa JF naamini kuna wachumi, wanasiasa na wengineo wengi ambao wanaweza kutoa mawazo yao ya nini kinaweza kufanyika au kufanyiwa majaribio hapa Africa ili kujikwamua kiuchumi, I don't believe for a second that we are so hopeless!

The big issue here is selfishness kwa sababu viongozi wakuu wa nchi wanajiona tayari wana kila kitu(essentials) kwa mfano kiongozi mtoto wake akiwa anasoma uk au canada halafu anaweza kubadilisha magari leo prado kesho benz au bmw I think he can think nothing about the nation.Ni vigumu sana kwa viongozi wetu kuunza kuweka mipango inayotekelezeka miaka 20 ijayo simply because by that time atakua out of office,mi nadhani huu ni wakati wa kutafuta solution to stand on our own 2 feet rather than depending on usa and europes

ni kweli umefika wakati sasa wakuanza kufikiria kuwa independent but it won't happen over night,it is a process,it need time and strong social economical strategies and political stability.

pia kuwe na mikakati ya kuwaatarifu wananchi hasa wale walio vijijini nini kinachoendelea hapa duniani, this crisis will not end tomorrow or a day after, seems like it is here to stay at least for a while, watu kuwa informed tu in hatua moja muhimu katika safari ya kuanza kujitegemea

I believe food production alone can be one of the major solutions to make Africa independent, but unfortunately it is the most neglected sector despite the facts that we have plenty of fertile land and agriculture employs mojority of Africans/Tanzanians

I think the time has come for Africans to benefit from mining industry. It is time to think hard of how can we take advantage of the crisis and weakening west economy to reform mining industry in Africa.

My opinion is - better do nothing and keep the gold and diamonds underground than giving it away to rich nations

Na habari ya kuimarisha masoko ya ndani ya Africa? we have everything in this continent, what keeps us from selling and buying more from within the continent??? mnaojua masuala ya uchumi tunaomba mtusaidie
