THE Director General of the National Museum, Dr Norbert Kayombo, is dead. He passed away in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday.

Dr Kayombo's death has left members of the institution in shock. He had reported for work on Monday morning and left for home apparently in good health in the evening.

On Tuesday morning, he had contacted his colleagues by telephone to say he was not feeling well, so would not be able to attend a board meeting that day.

At about 4.30 pm he passed away, at his residence in Gongo la Mboto in the outskirts of Dar es Salaam.

Ironically, Tuesday was exactly one day after he had celebrated his 57th birthday on Monday.

His burial is scheduled to take place this afternoon at a cemetery in Ukonga. The actual cause of his is yet to be established.

After receiving the news of his demise, the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the National Museum, Dr Costancia Rugumamu, told the ‘Daily News' that the sudden departure of Dr Kayombo had affected the institution greatly for a number of reasons.

''Dr Kayombo's death will greatly affect the various development plans he had put in place, as outlined in the National Museum's strategic plan.

One of those was to extend the museum to rural areas by establishing a number of small museum structures in various villages around the country,'' Dr Rugumamu said.

Board members were locked-up in a meeting on Thursday to plan for the DG's burial and discuss future plans bearing in mind the late Dr Kayombo had held the post since May 23, 1999.

Over the years, he had built several links and contacts, which were very useful in the establishment's prosperity.

'‘Someone else would have to start afresh and establish new links,'' according to Dr Rugumamu who, however, observed that this will take time.

Some delay in the progress of certain development plans that were being handled by the late Dr Kayombo is also expected.

Over his 23 years' experience in the museum, he had held several positions within the institution's management team.

His career had started at the University of Dar es Salaam, where he took his B.Sc Zoology and Marine Biology before moving on to take his M.Sc Biology together with his PhD at the Humboldt University in Germany.

The late Dr Kayombo was a member of several professional associations and committees. This included the International Council of Museums, the International Council of African Museums, the Network for Tropical Aquaculture Scientists and the Wildlife Conservation Society of Tanzania. He is survived by a widow and four children.
