Abuhashim Masudi attended secondary education at Bihawana and Songea Boys’ secondary schools from 1971 to 1976. After training as a secondary school teacher he taught English at Moshi technical secondary school before joining the University of Dar es Salaam for a BA. (Ed) degree programme. He joined the staff of the then Department of Education, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, at the university of Dar es salaam in as a tutorial assistant in 1985 and successfully completed his M.A. (Ed) degree programme in 1986. In 1989 he proceeded to the University of Leeds for doctoral studies where he successfully completed in early 1994.

Dr Masudi’s major area of specialization is History of Education, but other areas of interest include Principles of Education, Partnership in education provision and, Child Labour and access to basic education. He has conducted research on issues pertaining to equity, quality, national integration and child labour in relation to education. His publications include several papers, book chapters and a co-authored book.

He joined the University of Dodoma from the University of Dar es Salaam where I had worked for 22 years, seven of which as Head of the Departments of Educational Foundations and Adult Education. Among other things, he taught ‘Contemporary Education in East Africa’ for 10 years and introduced ‘History of Education’ as a core course after major curricular review in 2000 which he supervised. He has supervised a number of MA (ED) dissertations and some PhD candidates.

Dr Msudi was appointed coordinator of the first and last Matriculation Examinations in UDOM in July, 2007 and, the following month he was appointed Dean of the School of Education. His first task was to establish a School with its departments and the envisaged programmes. Under his supervision, four departments were established under the School of Education. These include:

    *

    Department of Educational Foundations
    *

    Department of Educational Psychology
    *

    Department of Curriculum and Teaching
    *

Department of Educational Management and Administration

Under these four departments, four degree programs were launched. The Bachelor of Education in Arts (BED. Arts) degree program was to be housed in the Department of Educational Foundations while that of Bachelor of Education in Commerce (BED. Com) was to be offered in the Department of Educational Management and Administration. The Bachelor of Education in Psychology (BED. Psych.) and the Bachelor of Arts with Education (BA. Ed) degree programmes are offered in the Departments of Educational Psychology and Curriculum and Teaching respectively. In concert with the transformation of the School of Education into a College of Education as from September, 2009, eight new undergraduate and 5 graduate programmes have been prepared. Some of the new programmes in the University Of Dodoma College Of Education have made the university stand out as a unique institution of higher learning in the country.
