Having proper education is a major solution to many challenges facing women, Mama Awena, the wife of the Zanzibar First Vice-President, Seif Shariff Hamad, said on Saturday at the opening of the Civic United Front (CUF) women meeting in Zanzibar.

She said that women constitute the majority population in the world including Zanzibar and yet they dwell in poverty and are few in decision-making forum like in legislature.

"We are the majority, we need to work hard for our rights at all levels, definitely it will be a solution to most of the political, economical and social (HIV/AIDS and job discrimination) problems," Awena said.

She said the Deputy UN Secretary General, Dr Asha-Rose Migiro, an increase of women seats in both Union parliament and Zanzibar House of Representatives were opportunities that women should use in developing themselves in increasing fight for their rights.

Awena, who rarely shows up in public gathering said: "Women should battle for higher positions including ministers, prime minister, vice- president, and president in the near future. Yes, we can."

Awena also called upon women and parents in general to work hard in averting moral-decay, currently at increase among children in the society. She said joint efforts by parents would bring change and improve behaviours of children.

The CUF women meeting held at Jamat-Khan hall, was organized by the party women wing from Zanzibar Urban district aiming at promoting unity among women
