The Civic United Front (CUF) said on Saturday that it will not join Chadema in forming an alternative government of the Official Opposition in the National Assembly, unless all opposition parties are involved in its composition.

“We want all parties with representation in the House to be involved not CUF and Chadema alone. This is how we have been operating since 1995, otherwise let Chadema go it alone,” said Wawi legislator, Mr Mohamed Hamad Rashid.

“During the last session, I was the Leader of the Official Opposition and Dr Wilbrod Slaa, was the deputy. We need to maintain such co-operation,” he explained.

On Thursday, Chadema appointed Mr Freeman Mbowe, the Member of Parliament for Hai, Leader of the Official Opposition, Mr Zitto Kabwe (Kigoma North MP), deputy leader and Mr Tundu Lissu (Singida East), Chief Whip.

Mr Rashid said CUF was not interested in top leadership positions in the opposition camp, but wanted other parties with representation in the House - NCCR-Mageuzi, Tanzania Labour Party (TLP) and United Democratic Party (UDP).

The MP also expressed concern over lack of co-operation between the two parties during
campaigns, where several Chadema leaders including Dr Slaa ‘uttered bad statements’
    against CUF leaders
    .

“Strong verbal attacks were made against Prof Ibrahim Lipumba and several other leaders under him as well as candidates. But since the polls are now over, let us start a new chapter of co-operation,” he said.

Efforts to get comments from Mr Mbowe and Mr Kabwe proved futile as their mobile phones were not reachable. However, Chadema Director of Parliament and Councils Affairs, Mr John Mrema, said on Thursday that the door was still wide open for CUF and other parties to join the official.[/FONT]
