Challenges Worldwide has an immediate volunteer vacancy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This is an exciting and dynamic role which will allow you to develop a range of new skills and experience in a demanding position whilst also making a positive difference to the local community.

This is ideal for a career break or for people looking to gain experience in the Not-for-Profit or International Development sectors. As with many of our assignments, this position comes with the opportunity to become a chartered manager.

Organisation Background
This role is based with an organization based in Dar es Salaam. It was founded and registered in 2006 to address the fact that existing activities and programmes for children which are carried out in Tanzania are inadequate given the scale and complexity of children’s problems in the country.

They work with children especially young girls who have been affected or are at risk of child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM) with the accompanied violence. Although they are based in Dar es Salaam, their intervention programmes have been conducted in Mwanza and Mara regions where child marriage and FGM are prevalent.

The organisation is aware that knowledge of their work is lacking in the wider community and as a result would like to improve communications, so that more people are aware of the organization and its work. The volunteer from Challenges Worldwide will assist in achieving this goal. Specifically the work done by the volunteer will increase the organization credibility particularly to our potential funders and stakeholders particularly at the grassroots level. The volunteer’s work will raise the voice of the young girls. In turn, it will increase the protection of their rights.

Purpose of Assignment
To develop a communications strategy to establish and maintain relationships with the various stakeholders and the wider public.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Ideas for improving the communication of success to the public
1.1. Observing the organisation’s work and ways of communication
1.2. Provide Ideas on improvement of the ways of communication

Develop a communications report and strategy
2. Establishing and maintaining links with local stakeholders.
2.1 Identifying potential local stakeholders to establish links and networking.
2.2 Identifying areas where the organisation and local stakeholders can collaborate in safeguarding children’s rights.
Established links which are used for fundraising and for policy advocacy.

3. Designing a new organisational brochure
3.1. Preparing a brochure which introduces the organization to people we are working with and potential funders.
3.2. Provide Ideas on how to spread the brochure for wider use.
A new brochure introducing the organisation to stakeholders.
4. Any other tasks as may arise, these may be based on communication issues which arise in the course of the organization’s work, or equally could be areas the volunteer identifies as needing his/her advice or assistance.

Skills and Experience Required
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;
- 3 years experience in the relevant sector
- An interests and/or experience in children rights works;
- Strong analytical skills;
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- A strong background in communications would be an advantage

They ideal candidate will also be:
- Self motivated with the ability to work independently;
- Professional, flexible, resourceful, adaptable, creative and culturally sensitive.
