So apparently we had no dignity before the white man who was enslaving and brutalizing us gave us his wondeful religion.

Tanzania: Christianity Taught Africans Dignity, Bishop Says
9 April 2009
Dar es Salaam Christianity brought to Africa not only belief in God through Christ in the spirit but also gave the African a sense of belonging and dignity in the world community, a Catholic bishop has said.
"It gave him the self-confidence to believe that we are all equal as sons of God," Bishop Method Kilaini of Dar es Salaam says. "It taught the despised, maltreated and enslaved African that in the same God all is possible, without distinction of colour or race. It gave the African a clear picture of everlasting peace and an equal place in heaven."
Bishop Kilaini's view, in a column in the April-June issue of 'BBC Focus on Africa' magazine, is likely to raise the eyebrows of many people who vehemently reject the notion that Africans had no civilization or religion before the arrival of Christianity.
Bishop Kilaini praises Christianity's contribution to education, social services, leadership formation and the struggle against colonialism in Africa.
"Christianity gave Africans a high standard of education that taught them dignity and gave them the courage to fight against colonial dominance. It also gave them civilization in the spirit of hard work and respect."
The bishop, however, notes that the European missionaries came from the same countries as the colonialists and to some extent justified colonialism, but "they fought very hard for the dignity and respect of the colonized."
But South African academic, Laurence Berman, writing in the same magazine, dismisses Christianity as "one of the most potent agents of imperialism" in Africa.
"By an insidious process, indigenous religious values were supplanted by Christianity. Proselytizing by force was not unknown. Guns and Bibles were the apostles of Christian imperialism."
