Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) youth leader James Ole Millya surrendered after he eluded the police for nearly a week.

There was a brief pandemonium at the Central Police Station here yesterday when the embattled Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) youth leader James Ole Millya surrendered after he eluded the police for nearly a week.

Scores of his followers were stopped by the Police from getting inside the acting regional police commander's office when he turned up for interrogation shortly after 12 noon.

    Mr Millya, who is the
ArushaRegional chairman for the CCM Youth Wing (UVCCM), was escorted by over 30 people to the RPC's office located on the first floor of the regional police headquarters building.

His arrival attracted a crowd of people as his followers tried to squeeze themselves into a tiny room upstairs that could hardly accommodate ten visitors but they were ordered out.

The mob that had escorted the CCM youth leader was forced to stay at the parking lot in front of the regional police head office as Mr. Millya was allowed in where it is said he had audience with the acting RPC Akili Mpwapwa and other senior police officers.

Eye witnesses said the official was accompanied into the RPC's office by Mr Moses Mahona, who is his advocate. Mr Millya came out of the RPC's office after only 15 minutes and told reporters that he had been told to report there again today (Tuesday).

"I have been told to report here gain tomorrow (Tuesday)," he said without elaborating on what he discussed with the regional police boss.

Some of the CCM youth leader's followers cheered and started singing after he emerged from the police station. They continued to sing and cheer as the leader's convoy headed towards the UVCCM head offices about a kilometre away, along Makongoro Road.
