The process to fill the vacant Uzini Constituency seat in Unguja Island has started after the two rival political parties, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and Civic United Front (CUF) begin nomination processes for their candidates to contest in the February 12, 2012 by-election.

The election is to be held following the death of legislator Mussa Khamis Silima, 58, who died in motor accident last August while on his way to Dodoma for the budget parliament session.

Silima was the member of the
Zanzibar House of Representatives for Uzini, but was among the five members of the House to represent Zanzibar in the union parliament as per the constitution.

Until mid Tuesday ten CCM members including the prominent and vocal businessman, Mr Mohamed Raza, had picked party nomination forms to become the party's flag bearers.

Others are Ms Fatma Ali Vuai, Mr Abdulazak Mussa Abdalla, Mr Mattar Ali Salum, Mr Haji Amer Haji, Mr Khalfan Khamis Awadhi, Mr Tafana Kassim Mzee, Mr Suleiman Vuai Suleiman, Mr Othman Ali Maulid and Mr Said Ali Hamad.

According to the CCM secretary for South Unguja region, Mr Shukuru Adam Ali, next Friday is the deadline to pick and return nomination forms.

CUF Director for Publicity, Mr Salum Bimani announced that party members were free to pick nomination forms starting today (Wednesday) until December 12, 2011. Other political parties such as the
Tanzania Association of Farmers' Party (AFP) are preparing to nominate their candidates as well.

The
Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) by-elections timetable shows that candidates from their respective political parties will collect nomination forms from ZEC between January 16 and 23, followed by the nomination day on January 24, next year. Election campaigns will start on January 28 to February 11, 2012.

Although Uzini Constituency is seen as a CCM strong hold, CUF's Deputy Secretary General Mr Ismail Jussa Ladu said his party is confident of winning the by-election, the first to be held under the Government of National Unity (GNU).
