A hot debate ensued yesterday in the House of Representatives over Zanzibar's benefits in the Union government while some speakers openly declaring that they were not in favour of the set-up.

The Representatives were contributing to the budget estimates for the office of the Second Vice President of Zanzibar during the ongoing House of Reps meeting at Chukwani, Zanzibar.

A representative for Wawi constituency Salehe Nassor Juma (CUF) said Isles' residents are not benefiting from the Union, adding: "I would like to declare that I don't like the union because it is not benefiting us economically due to poor systems. For over 48 years now, leaders have failed to find solutions to Union problems…there is need to break it", he said.

Kitope representative, Makame Mshimba Mbarouk (CCM) claimed the current system of Union government operations has denied Zanzibar benefits from the natural gas which is plenty in Tanzania Mainland.

Abdalla Juma Abdalla (CUF) from Chonga called on government executives to consider suggestions given by different stakeholders who want Tanganyika and Zanzibar to separate.

"We should consider people's opinion on matters of the Union", he noted.

Special Seats Representative, Asha Bakari Makame (CCM) and Vice Chairperson of Zanzibar Women Wing (UWT) called on representatives to stand for the benefits of Zanzibaris in the Union government.

A representative for Mji Mkongwe Ismail Jussa Ladhu (CUF) blamed government officials over failure to find solutions to Union matters.

Tabling the budget estimates for the 2012/13, State Minister, Second Vice President's Office Mohamed Aboud Mohamed said the union has registered a lot of economic successes.

He called on Zanzibar residents to turn out in big numbers to air their opinions to the Constitution Review Commission.
