The first major final of the season gets underway on Sunday with Aston Villa afforded the chance to fight for a trophy for the first time in a decade. The Villans take on current Carling Cup holders Manchester United, having last contested a final in 2000 when they were defeated 1-0 by Chelsea in the last ever FA Cup final at the original Wembley Stadium.

Sir Alex Ferguson and Martin O'Neill will battle for the first trophy of the season.

    • Forum: Who will win the Carling Cup?
Unbeaten in their last 12 games, Villa are on a high and boast the best defensive record in the Premier League (conceding just 21 goals all season). However, they face a United side who have scored 27 goals in their last 10 games and have a history of success in the major competitions.
Aesthetically, both sides are up there with the best and have a commitment to attacking football that is laudable, so the showpiece should be entertaining, while Villa have laid to rest their recent poor run of form against the Premier League champions to beat and draw with them this season. During his tenure at Leicester, Martin O'Neill won both the 1997 and 2000 League Cup finals and was runner-up in 1999, so he will be in familiar territory, although Sir Alex Ferguson knows something about the big occasion as well.
Manchester United player in focus: Wayne Rooney: Who else? The country's most in-form striker has 19 goals in 19 games and is at the heart of everything good about United's play this season. Rooney has stepped out from under the shadow of Ronaldo and is thriving in his central striking role - shown most recently by his enhanced heading ability and desire to charge into the box. On his day, few can stop him and he's been having more than his fair share of success in 2009-10.
Aston Villa player in focus: Richard Dunne: Discarded by Manchester City this summer, Dunne finds himself up against one of his fiercest rivals and has a point to prove in a Villa defence that has been the best in the land this year. One of the most dependable centre-backs around, Dunne's form has been a cornerstone on Villa's road to Wembley and their rise up the table and the Irishman can cement his place in history if he manages to keep United's flying attack quiet.
Key battle: Darren Fletcher vs. James Milner. 'Mr Anti-football' according to some, but Fletcher brings combative tackles, a good range of passing and a shield in front of the defence that is so important to the way United play. He can chip in with goals and assists, but his bread and butter is breaking up the opposition attacks and distributing the ball to his team-mates. Fletcher will be tasked with stopping the threat of Milner, who has blossomed since converting into a central midfield role and he will do well to match the Englishman's stamina and desire. Conversely, how well Milner manages to halt Fletcher's ambition may just tip the balance of the tie.
Tactics: Rooney will be the focal point of the United attack, with the wide areas of importance in getting him the right service. Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick add steel to the central midfield area as well as the occasional spark of creativity and Fergie will have his men defending deep when Villa are in possession and then breaking quickly. O'Neill's men will look to get the ball in the box a lot and should pressure United to break up their passing game, but will also be looking to use the pace of their wingers to exploit any defensive lapses.
Quotes: Wayne Rooney on his current form: "I am just enjoying playing and scoring goals. Hopefully it continues but I have never really set targets. Obviously I missed it [the Carling Cup final] last year because I was a bit ill before the game so I didn't play but hopefully I can play this year."
Martin O'Neill on the final date: "For a football club of this standing, it would be fantastic to win it. We should be contesting more semi-finals - and finals if it's at all possible. In terms of it being essential to win, the club will survive without winning but it'd still be very good. The winning of trophies gives a football club renewed status and a confidence to go and compete again."

James Milner and Stephen Warnock have impressed this season.

In the news: Lifelong United fan Keith Harris, the former chairman of the Football League and executive chairman of investment bank Seymour Pierce, called on fans to boycott matches and stop buying merchandise if they are to force the Glazer family to sell. "It is no good fans turning up 10 minutes late for matches, they have to do more than that,'' he said. Meanwhile, Villa's Stephen Warnock is being tipped as the replacement for Ashley Cole in England's left-back slot, after Wayne Bridge opted not to be part of the squad following the recent allegations over John Terry's affair with his former girlfriend.
Aston Villa team news: There are still some injury concerns over Gabriel Agbonlahor and Stiliyan Petrov, but both have played in recent games and should be able to play. Stephen Warnock is also back in the first XI after injury trouble, but Nigel Reo-Coker looks set to be missing for another month with an ankle injury.
Manchester United team news: Rio Ferdinand won't make the game as his troublesome back injury has flared up again. Edwin van der Sar will return for Ben Foster in goal, while there should also be places for Rafael and Darren Fletcher after they were rested against West Ham. Ryan Giggs' broken wrist will keep him out, while John O'Shea is also a long-term absentee.
Probable Aston Villa line-up (4-4-2): Friedel, Cuellar, Collins, Dunne, Warnock, Petrov, Milner, Downing, Young, Heskey, Agbonlahor.
Probable Manchester United line-up (4-5-1): Van der Sar, Rafael, Evans, Vidic, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Scholes, Fletcher, Nani, Rooney.
