Cheeye gets 10-year jail term over Global Fund

The director of economic affairs in the office of the President Teddy Ssezi Cheeye has been convicted sentenced to 10 years in prison for mismanaging global funds.

The anti corruption court Judge Justice John Bosco Katutsi has ordered Cheeye to refund 100 millions.

Prosecution accused Cheeye of embezzling 120 million shillings meant for the fight against HIV/AIDS, Malaria and TB.

He is said to have made false entries in accountability statements of his project Uganda centre for accountability.

Cheeye sentenced to 10 years in jail over Global Fund


The Director of Economic monitoring at the Internal Security Organisation Mr Teddy Ssezi Cheeye, has been sentenced to ten years in jail.
High Court Judge Justice John Bosco Katutsi says Cheye embezzled shs 120 million from the Global Fund in 2005. The money was meant for HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria patients.

“The accused set up a company which to his knowledge was a mere sham, or simulacrum, only intended to feather his own nest with ill gotten money. In siphoning funds meant to alleviate and to ease the sufferings of the wretched of the earth, the victims of the scourge of HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria into his own stomach he is no better than a mass murderer which in truth he is,” the judge.

Cheye’s lawyers have indicated that they will appeal against the sentence. More to follow.
