Retired US president George Bush has applauded the government for proper management of aid funds in the health sector, saying his government is keen to continue providing financial support.Bush made the remarks in Dar es Salaam on Thursday during his visit to Mnazi Mmoja Health Care Center. He commended the implementation of life-saving programmes, especially on HIV/Aids.While at Jipende (Love Yourself) Ramuu’s Salon at Magomeni Mapipa in the city, Bush applauded the owner for her efforts in educating women on health issues. He said as the world celebrated Aids Day it was high time to measure the successes and failures so as to come up with new strategies in curbing the scourge.Earlier, Dr Mary Manyika-Sando, who is Maternal and Child Coordinator, Management and Development for Health at Mnazi Mmoja hospital, said the assistance they received from the US government through the President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR) had helped to save the lives of thousands of children and women. She said currently the centre was providing medicines to over 5,000 patients, adding that since its establishment it had served 635,000 patients.According to her, the centre also provided other basic medical care for tuberculosois (TB) and dental care and treatment. She said about 5,294 women were counselled, tested and provided with screening results this year.At Jipende Ramuu’s Salon, the operator, Rahma Seleman, told the retired President that since the salon was opened in October 2010, she had been able to educate more than 50 customers on HIV/Aids and cancer issues. She said during waiting time, customers were taught on the symptoms of HIV/Aids and breast cancer.“We also insist them on proper use of women's condoms”, she noted.Bush also visited Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI). He was accompanied by his wife, Laura Bush, and daughters Jeanna and Barbara.
