Campaigners' fury at £286m deal to end corruption probe after BAE Systems admits using cash to win contracts

Anti-arms trade campaigners have attacked a £286million deal allowing BAE Systems to settle a corruption case out of court as it meant there would now be 'no opportunity to discover the truth'.
The defence and aerospace giant agreed to pay the record corporate fine last night to settle claims it paid bribes to win lucrative arms deals.
The firm admitted concealing payments worth 'hundreds of millions of dollars' that were used to help win the contracts in Saudi Arabia and Tanzania.
It is a serious embarrassment for the firm, but the decision means it will avoid the additional public relations nightmare of a lengthy court case.
Deal: BAE Systems was alleged to have paid bribes to win overseas contracts, including the sale of Tornado jets to Saudi Arabia.
In two separate announcements, BAE was fined £256million by the U.S. department of justice after pleading guilty to conspiring to make false statements to its government.
This fine relates to a claim that payments were made to a Saudi official in a £40billion contract to supply military equipment, including Tornado fighter jets, to Saudi Arabia.
The Americans were furious because the cash had been funnelled through U.S. banks.
They also wanted to make it clear to BAE that such tactics are not acceptable in the U.S. - where it is now a major player.
In Britain, BAE must fork out £30million. It reached an agreement with the Serious Fraud Office that it will plead guilty to a lesser offence under the Companies Act 1985 of failing to keep reasonably accurate accounting records for its activities in Tanzania.
This relates to an £88million contract in 1999 to supply a radar system to the country, which had no real use for such a state of the art system. A former marketing adviser in Tanzania is said to have pocketed payments of almost £8million.

Part of the £30million penalty will be a fine - to be decided by a crown court judge - while the balance will be a charity payment to the people of Tanzania.
While much smaller than the U.S. fine, this is a record for a criminal offence by a company in the UK.
The previous record was a £6.5million fine by the SFO for bridge building firm Mabey & Johnson, which was convicted last year of foreign bribery.
The global deal brings to an end almost six years of investigations by the SFO, beginning with its probe into arms deals in Saudi Arabia.
Instead of admitting to corruption, the parties struck a deal whereby BAE would pay the fines and admit to the lesser criminal charges.
But the Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT) said it was furious with the SFO's decision to settle with BAE as bribery and corruption allegations would not now be open to public scrutiny.
Spokesman Kaye Stearman said: 'CAAT is outraged and angry that the allegations about BAE will not be aired in a criminal court and that the Serious Fraud Office has accepted a plea bargain relating only to the smallest deal.
'After the Government stopped the SFO's inquiry into the company's Saudi deals, it was even more important the truth about its dealings in central and eastern Europe and Africa was made public.
'One day a former BAE agent appears in court charged with corruption, the next BAE is let off for an accounting misdemeanour.'
Although admitting to criminal charges is a huge embarrassment for BAE, the lesser charges mean its ability to conduct future business in the U.S. - where it is the biggest foreign supplier to the Pentagon - will not be affected.
SFO director Richard Alderman called it a 'ground-breaking achievement' and said it sent out a powerful message to other corporates.
He warned the SFO would 'go after' companies that continue with a culture that is 'out of date'.
The U.S. charges relate to the arms deal with Saudi Arabia, plus infringements in the Czech Republic and Hungary. The SFO charge relates only to Tanzania.
And whereas Britain was forced to drop its probe into BAE's dealings with Saudi in late 2006, under the advice of former prime minister Tony Blair and attorney general Lord Goldsmith, the U.S. was free to carry on investigating.
Norman Lamb, arch BAE critic and Liberal Democrat MP, said: 'It is a damning indictment of the political interference by the British Government that the Americans have secured admissions by BAE while we allowed them to get away with it.'
BAE chairman Dick Olver said: 'We are pleased to draw a very heavy line under these legacy issues.'
He noted none of the charges related to activities after 2002. Under his guidance, the group has made huge efforts to clean up its corporate culture, including cutting ties with the middle men who are at the centre of the allegations.

Chenge's aspiration to speakers office and black painting Sitta on last weeks press conference is not by chance. Neither the strong words of BWM on closing CCM campaign nor the vote fraud by NEC and ultimately having our rulers.
Since ours is a corrupt regime what do you expect? No way can an Angel be in the helm of satanic administration. Haven't you seen our last regime! Would you be shocked if this time those on high positions will be worse than the former?
This is the last chance in Magongonis office, history clearly shows how were these five years in that house, starting with Mzee Ruksa and BWM and this time dont expect the difference, only the degree of looting increases with exponential numbers. In the past regimes the corrupt elements were working independently and secretly but this time it is a network, public and backed by the system and the head prefect.
We will be looted with supersonic speed as the slogan goes. Didnt we witness how much they were buying MP positions particularly when they had lost it was incredible offers.

Hili litakuwa ni tusi kubwa kutoka kwa CCM kwa Watanzania wote wapenda haki na maendeleo including makada wa CCM ambao ni walala hoi kama mimi.

On the other side kotekote wana hali ngumu.
Wakimpa Sitta atawaua kwa kurusu hoja za mafisadi. na kwa kuwa sasa hivi wapiganaji ni wengi, mashambulizi yatakuwa kama vile kupiga kibaka.
Kama wakimpa Chenge, hoja binafsi ya kumwondoa yeye kwanza italetwa na wapiganaji, iukishindikana ni vita vya msituni dhidi ya mafisadi in full swing. Hapu ujue Sitta, Mwakyembe na Wapiganaji wote wa CCM watakuwa upande wa Upinzani.
Adhabu ambayo CCM wamepata 2010 hakuna Mbunge atataka naye aipate 2015.
