After a weekend of breathless Premier
League action its time to dust off your
Spanish phrasebooks and enjoy a little
Iberian fare.
El Clasicos back tonight in the first leg of the Spanish Supercup its Lionel Messi versus Cristiano Ronaldo, Barcelona versus Real Madrid and it should be a cracker.
Mourinhos men began their league title defence with a home draw to Valencia, while Tito Vilanovas reign in Barcelona began in classic Guardiola fashion with a 5-1 destruction of Real Sociedad.
Of course, the two managers have history. The Special One guilty of an eye gouge on a Barcelona assistant in last seasons Super Cup. That assistant was Vilanova will he forgive and forget, or will blood boil in the dug-outs once again. Tonights match may have little riding on the result, but pride is everything in this battle of the worlds best players.
In anticipation of tonights match, lets
remember some of the best El Clasicos of the last 10 years.
5). Barcelona 3-3 Real Madrid March 2007 19-year-old Lionel Messi torments Real Madrid, scoring Barcelona's first El Clasico hat-trick since Romario in 1994. The diminutative Argentinian becomes a household name.
4).Real Madrid 2-6 Barcelona - May 2006 Madrid were humiliated at the Bernabeu as Frank Rijkaards Barcelona including an inspired Ronaldinho and Thierry Henryslammed six past Iker Casillas
3). Real Madrid 4-1 Barcelona May 2008 Bernd Schusters Real Madrid were treated to a guard of honour by Barcelona at the Bernabeu as theyd already wrapped up the La Liga title. A sheepless Barca couldn't get out of the stadium fast enough.
2). Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid April 2012 After three straight La Liga titles Madrid were desperate to wrestle back the domestic crown from the Catalans. This was the decider, with Madrid in pole position, and Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up the steal the winner, sending Mourinhos side clear at the summit.
1). Barcelona 5-0 Real Madrid November 2010 Jose Mourinho was embarrassed in his first Nou Camp El Clasico. Madrid travelled to Barcelona as league leaders but were dismantled by Leo Messi and co in a one-side rout. In the Messi-Ronaldo battle there was
only one winner.
