Announcement: A Symposium on The Future of Multiparty Democracy in East Africa

The African Studies Program of the University of Iowa will hold a Symposium
entitled ³The Future of Multiparty Democracy in East Africa² on April 1-2,
2011. All events will be held at the International Programs Commons,
University Capitol Centre, on the University of Iowa campus.
The keynote lecture, on the afternoon of April 1, will be presented by Dr.
Wilibrod Slaa, Secretary General of CHADEMA (Chama cha Demokrasia na
Maendeleo), the leading opposition political party in Tanzania. Dr. Slaa
was the presidential candidate of CHADEMA in the 2010 general election.
Other participants from Tanzania include two prominent journalists, Jenerali
Ulimwengu and Bernard Mapalala, and also Josephine Mushumbusi from CHADEMA
as well as Mohamed Said, an independent scholar. Participants from the U.S.
will include Joe L.P. Lugalla, Joshua Rubongoya, Joel Barkan, Aili Mari
Tripp and James Brennan. Among the topics discussed by participants will be
multiparty politics in Tanzania and Uganda, the role of the media in
democratic politics, trends in African democratization, Muslim politics in
Tanzania, women and democratization, and the history of opposition politics
in Tanzania.
