Medication
- A method used to stop thumb sucking is to create a habit to replace the thumb sucking. Whenever a person has the urge to thumb suck, it is helpful to engage in a different activity such as chewing gum or sucking on a lollipop.
Therapy
- In some cases, thumb sucking is a symptom of some type of anxiety a person is feeling. For a person who sucks their thumb when feeling this way, an anti-anxiety medication is helpful. Doctors generally prescribe these medications.
- Cognitive behavioral therapy is a form of psychotherapy used to assist people in changing their thoughts and behaviors. This therapy is effective in treating thumb suckers who are unable to quit on their own.

Instructions
- 1Praise the desired behavior. When the child is not sucking her thumb, notice and tell her she's doing a good job. If you only call attention to the bad behavior, the issue will become a negative one.
- 2Ask the child if he is feeling scared or insecure about anything. Often, thumb sucking can be the result of tense emotions. Address any issues he brings up.
- 3Ask your dentist or pediatrician to explain the negative effects that thumb sucking can have on teeth alignment.
- 4Ask the child how she thinks she can best break the habit. Offer options, like a sock or athletic tape at night.
- 5Place the sock over the child's hand like a mitten before he goes to sleep. You might need to put it back on during the night if he removes it.
- 6Gently tape the child's thumb to the palm of her hand before she goes to bed. Position her thumb, then loop the tape all the way around the thumb and back of the hand. Only loop it once or twice and make sure the loop is not too tight. Remove it in the morning by cutting the tape and washing the hand with plenty of soap to remove any remaining adhesive.
