MORE than 1000 police will guard the terrorism trial of radical cleric Abu Bakar Bashir in Jakarta today. Bashir is accused of motivating and financing terrorism and of being the supreme leader of a group running a military train- ing camp. The 72-year-old faces the death penalty if found guilty.
It is alleged that Bashir was the leader of a group calling itself al-Qaida of the Veranda of Mecca and that it ran a military training camp in the jungles of Aceh with 43 students.
Bashir was co-founder of Jemaah Islamiah, the group behind numerous deadly bombing campaigns in Indonesia, including the 2002 Bali nightclub attacks that killed 200 people, including 88 Australians. The trial is expected to last for up to five months.
