600 feared dead as migrant boat sinks off Tripoli, Italy says 300 headed for Malta

    By Karl Stagno-Navarra

Many migrants are feared dead as the boat they were on destined for Italy or Malta sank a few miles off the coast of Tripoli.

Reports suggest that the boat, laden with some 600 asylum-seekers sank some time yesterday as it set sail from Tripoli and broke in half, throwing all into the water.

Many women, children and new born babies were reported to be on board the ill-fated boat and are feared dead.

Some survivors are said to have managed to get to shore after swimming for two hours, while merchant ships have recovered at least 12 bodies.

The news has also been confirmed by UNHCR spokesperson Laura Boldrini who said: "Unfortunately this confirms that the Libyan government has no problem putting its people at risk, on dangerous vessels, just to put pressure on destination countries. These people are just being sent to their deaths."

The migrant boat left Tripoli together with another that has reached Lampedusa early this morning.

Reports reaching MaltaToday from Lampedusa that some of the refugees that have landed are claiming that they have been informed that relatives of theirs have died in the tragedy off Tripoli.

Meanwhile, another migrant boat that was located at 50 miles off Lampedusa early this afternoon has been reported by the Italian Coast Guard to have changed route and is heading for Malta.

The boat is said to be carrying up to 300 African asylum seekers.

MaltaToday has so far not been able to seek confirmation on this from the AFM.

Usishangae kutumiwa kwa picha za watu weusi.
    Ndio utaratibu wenyewe.

African migrants rescued off Italian island
Incident comes a day after a boat laden with another such group of 600 people sank off Tripoli.

Italian police and coastguard officials rescued some 400 African migrants coming from Libya after their boat was tossed against rocks off the tiny island of Lampedusa.

Images of the rescue showed people jumping in panick or falling into the choppy waters as their boat heaved in the waves on Sunday.

Some managed to make their way to shore holding on to ropes that had been attached to the boat's stern; others were hauled up on shore by rescue crews in the water.

Fabrizio Pisanelli, a customs official, said the boat's steering had stopped working as the boat was nearing Lampedusa's port shortly after 4am on Sunday. Strong winds had pushed the boat against rocks, throwing migrants overboard.

Three police officials who had boarded the boat in open seas helped control the situation, and rescuers reached the migrants immediately, saving them all. Pisanelli said they included women and children, and were from sub-Saharan Africa.

The boat had apparently been headed for Malta but was escorted by the Maltese coastguard towards Lampedusa, the officials were quoted as saying.

The incident comes a day after a migrant boat laden with 600 men, women and children - mostly African refugees - sunk off the coast of Tripoli.

Al Jazeera's Karl Stagno-Navarra, reporting from the nearby island of Malta, said that most of those on the boat were feared dead. He said that a rescue operation was under way and a few bodies had been recovered.

"The information we are receiving from the island of Malta, with regards to this boat, is that so far only 15 have managed to reach the shores after they swam for about two hours," he said.

"Meanwhile, we understand that this was one of two boats that left Tripoli on Friday which was headed for Italy.

"A number of those migrants who reached Lampedusa in the first boat are now claiming to have received phone calls from relatives both in Libya and on mainland Italy to inform them that their relatives on board the second boat, which went down, are now dead."

Hopes are also fading for 22 African migrants missing after their small boat took on water off the coast of southern Spain.

Rescuers pulled 29 people from the water on Thursday and a search for the others continued about 43km from Melicena.

Some of the rescued said a woman, two infants and 19 men are missing. The boat had set off from Morocco.

The hope of anyone surviving in the water after 10 hours is remote, officials say.

Wazungu ndio wamewatuma hao waafrica wazamie kwenda ulaya? Sema matatizo yetu ya kushindwa kuboresha hali ya watu wetu ndiyo inasababisha tunakimbilia ulaya wala sio kuwalaumu wazungu.

Were you trying to respond to my post? You might have misunderstood me. I didn't deny the fact that there are illegal immigrants moving from Africa to Europe. I just meant that whenever disgusting issues/bad news occur, it is always the blacks who are depicted in pictures/video by the media.

You can also confirm this by examining the file photo from Reuters (in your post)- it is not for the current event. They'll always be using the same photo (with black people) even if they are talking of illegal immigrants in different (non-african/non-black) context.

Nanren nakubaliana na wewe kwamba waafrica ni watu wa kupakaziwa. This is deeply embedded in white people's minds. It is their way of 'reminding' themselves that they are the best although this is not the case. But in this particular story, it is true that African immigrants were involved in the ill-fated attempt to reach Italy.
