Fifty-four Tanzanian nationals have been arrested by the Zambian Immigration Department for illegally mining gold in Kabwe, north of Lusaka.
The illegal immigrants were arrested during a joint operation conducted by a combined team of the state security from Immigration Department and the Drug Enforcement Commission.
Spokesperson for Immigration Department Mr. Justine Siame confirmed on Saturday in Lusaka saying the illegal immigrants have since been charged for engaging in business without permits contrary to section 29 of the Immigration and Deportation Act 18 of 2010.
Mr Siame says the 54 are detained pending prosecution.
