How They Qualified For AFCON 2012: The crocodiles qualified as Group I best runners-up. The team qualified for the prestigious tournament after suffering only a single defeat to Ghana in the last round of qualifiers. Sudan finished second and were one of the two teams picked as the best runners-up, along with Libya. They will be the only east African representatives at the tournament.
Coach: Gaffer of the side is Mohammed Ahmed Abdalla. He took over the Sudan national team in 2008. He was replaced by Stephen Constantine in February 2009. Captain: Skipper of the side is Mahamoudou Kere. He is a center back who plays his club football in Turkey with Konyaspor, following over a decade spent in Belgium with Charleroi. He took part in the 2004 and 2010 AFCON competition with his national team, and has amassed over 40 international caps for the Stallions.
Star Player: Moumouni Dagano is the star of the stallions. He made his international debut in 1999 aged 18 and has since been an important striker for his national team, with over 20 goals to his credit with the Stallions. The Al-Khor (Qatar) attacker was the joint top goalscorer of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with 12 goals, along with Fijian striker Osea Vakatalesau. He is experienced, having played in the 2004 and 2010 AFCON competitions.
Young Talent: Alain Traore is the most promising young talent of the team. The young starlet has had an impressive run this season with Auxerre, and after only nine matches, he had already found the net six times for his Ligue 1 side. The 22-year-old admitted to interest from Manchester United, but with a good head on his shoulders, he decided to play on for the French side and work his way towards a bigger European team when the time is right.
Probable Starting XI: The Stallions are known to be an attacking side, using the speed of players like Pitroipa, Alain Traore and Dagano up front, while defensive midfielders Koffi and Rouamba keep opponents at bay in the middle of the park and win the ball for their strikers. Captain Kere leads by example and marshals the defense.
