20/20 tonite: On Albino murders in TZ

To be fair, Americans have been known to materially assist many persecuted minority peoples in countries all over the world including Africa eg, so-called Somali Bantus who were airlifted en masse to the US after being provided asylum on humanitarian grounds. Perhaps Americans should consider taking some similar course of action towards Albino peoples in East and Central Africa.

Americans can't help everybody. Others should also step up and help. But with regards to the case of Albinos in East and Central Africa, we don't need the Americans or the British or anybody else for that matter to come in and help. We can help our own people by severely punishing those who perpetrate the crimes against them. But if we can't even protect the disabled then I'm afraid we aren't able and capable of doing anything on our own.

In my opinion, the least the powers-that-be in that God-forsaken land that is Tanzania could do is establish shelters for individuals born with Albinism, for its obvious to everyone they've more or less totally failed in prevention of slaughtering of Albinos in rural areas where the rule of law is weak if not totally non-existent.

A bunch of days ago I came across a story on the internet about some such similar asylum (or boarding school if you will) for kids born with albinism somewhere in Mwanza, but the whole thing was brought up in the context of an appeal for assistance with availability of clean running water at the facility. So it appears that one or another private NGO out there is already actively involved in providing a safe, conducive living conditions for these poor souls, but there's still a need for further assistance in certain areas of their operations.

Otherwise, I'm not so sure about the deterrence effects of punishment on overall criminal behavior, but one thing I really happen to believe in is protection/prevention as alternative to cure.

Halafu, baada ya muda wakasema,we are going for a commercial break, when we come back we will show you a place where to be an albino is a death sentence.
I am not saying that I know why such evil things are happenning, lakini inaelekea kwamba unapoongea kuhusu kuyazuia haya mauaji ya albino, unaona kama vile unaongea peke yako. Hao wauaji hawasikii.
Lakini mafaniko makubwa yamepatikana. Mauaji yalianza kupunguka, hasa pale Waziri Mkuu 'alipolia',[katika Bunge wakati anaongea kuhusu albino].Lakini hakuna mtu yoyote anajua mambo haya yanatokea kwa sababu gani.

HAYA NDIO MANENO YA WADAU WA USA

Why are people blaming the president and the government? They are doing their best to educate people and search out those who kill albinos. These acts are done in secret and are extremely hard to anticipate and procecute. To blame the government for the acts of a few ignorant and greedy people is not fair!

As a teacher of the blind I was so touched by this story. I would like to find a way to collect and send basic items such as: hats, sunvisors, sunscreen, sunglasses, etc. Can 20/20 help to start such a collection? They are also in need of low vision eye care specialists.

He is no different he is a regular teenager, just like every other teenager, i never treated him any different he is the best and i love him and i am so proud of him.I don't know why people act like this is a disease they are human beings just as we are, i hate when people look at him like he is from another planet. I told him when people stare just stare right back so they can see how it feels. I also teld him "Papi you are different and that makes you special, we are boring because we all look the same". No he can't drive and i told him so what ur going to own the car dealership and have your own driver.

The government of that nation should arrest all the witch doctors of that nation and hack off their arms and feet, and anyone who would be suspect of such crimes. We have taken in so many refugees in our country and given them aid, and there are people in our own country who needs help, we cannot be god to the whole world, our nation is fast becoming a third world nation as it is.I wish we could be god to the entire world, but we can't, it's an impossible task.Folks if we truly want to help innocent people like that then we should all do as our great God Almighty Jesus Christ says to do, and that's to fast and pray, yes call upon God with prayers and fasting, that's the real way to help poor innocent lives like these..............If you think something should be done immediately for these folks, and you truly mean it thenGo 24 hours without food or drink, and get down on your knees during that time several times and cry out to God in sincereity and ask God's intervention in this matter, that's the kind of fast and prayer God hears and respects, that's the kind of prayers we should be willing to give for others....... If we are not willing then all our tears, and feelings for the welfare of others is vain and false ......

I am saddened by the horrific experience of the Albinos of Tanzania. How would one send support to the refuge where the few lucky children are protected? Also is there a way to follow up with the women that lost her arms to determine if she could be fitted with prostheses?

Tanzania is a country of extreme beauty - landscape and the people. The people are mild tempered and friendly in comparison to the neighboring countries. I know, because I was born in Tanzania and spent my early childhood years there. Many people fail to realize how fortunate they are to be living in a country where criminal atrocities are not tolerated. The people of Tanzania are the victims of such political corruption and bueauracy - only through western intervention and support there is hope of a possible future and security. I could not stop the tears through the entire segment. I am angry at the Tanzanian government and the UN for their nonchalant attitude, whilst more children become victims of this brutality. As many have expressed, we have to power to do something. I hope this documentary has touched the lives of many people, those who live with albinism and those who do not. I nor any of my family members have albinism, however I felt an emotionally connection. I plan to make a difference for those children - with albinism and without.

Does ABC have a list of LEGITIMATE charities helping albino children in Tanzania? I would like to help. Please look into this and help us help them! Undoubtedly many will be moved to help but won't know how. I can't find a legitimate web site or address for the Tanzanian Albino Society. Also, my husband is willing to volunteer his time to build them a web site if they don't have one. He is a Systems Engineer with years of experience. Neither of us know how to offer help- or where to. All the best!

My twin sons have albinism. To imagine that these children are being hunted and cut into pieces is beyond my understanding. I suggest the UN do more than right a stern letter! People with albinism face many challenges in their lives, it is despicable that this is going on. I would like to send school supplies and sun cream to the school if anyone has the info i would appreciate it!

I was shocked and disgusted that in this day and age such horrible acts continue to occurr. I have twin sons with albinisim and my heart broke to hear of someone stealing a baby and cutting his legs off. I never cease to be amazed by the ignorance and cruelty of people. I plan to send school supplies to the school that is protecting theses children.

Treacherous, I didn't sleep well last night, thinking of how this life is so unthinkable for these poor people.

As a Tanzanian, I am deeply saddened ashamed and infuriated at what is going on in the country.I commend ABC news for exposing these murders, I hope that this news story will pressure the government to act accordingly. The police and other institututions who are suppossed to protect the public lack the resources they need because taxpayers money unfortunately ends up financing fancy lifestyles of the greedy government officials! Kudos to the BBC reporter Vicky Ntetema who was brave enough to investigate this story so that it came to be told to the whole world. Mungu Ibariki Tanzania!!

Where is the leadership? President Kikwete was in the U.S. last week, asking for investment in Tanzania and charming his audience at the U.N. How can we embrace a leader of a country who has let this barbaric practice continue? Tanzania has the reputation of being a "peaceful" country, but the people are suffering through the government's corruption and failure to act. President Kikwete has been flying under the radar and making NO DECISIONS to solve any of these problems. What has he accomplished since he was elected?

ABC is "exposing" this barbaric and horrific crime that takes place in a country that is stuck in the dark ages. However, America, all polished up and educated, does the same thing every day in much higher numbers. Abortion is perfectly legal, and brutal. "Doctors" not unlike those "witch doctors," rip off one arm and one leg at a time in order to fit the rest of the baby through the vaginal opening. Yet, this is considered humane? God have mercy on this 1st world country. "To whom much is given, much is required."

I am a person with albinism myself. I just like to say thank God that I live here in the Good Old U.S of A. It's very rare to have someone with albinism killed here in the United States but it happens. The thing that saddens me about the whole continent of Africa is that a lot of the small countries are in termoil with each other. You would think that after 300 years that most of the African society have evolved to a point where they no longer need to live the endiginous lifestyles. Let's not forget about all othe the other types of murders that have happened in the past in different parts of Africa. It may sound sick but I am not surprised at what is happening in certain parts of Africa with the people with albinism.

It is the power of great journalism to shed light on subjects left in dark corner and to ignite our anger. But it is up to us to do more than just despair and comment helplessly. This program talked about a Canadian organization dedicated to working in this area. Please, for those of us who may not be able to travel these many miles to help our fellow man, donations DO make a huge difference. http://www.underthesamesun.com. We can also write the government of Tanzania. Tourism is very important to this nation and if our tourist dollars are contingent on our action, we again send a powerful message.

White folks are making the tragic plight of albinos in some African societies into a big deal simply because they are obviously mesmerized and touched na binadamu ambao, kutokana ngozi yao nyeupe, wana nyanyapaliwa na kuuwawa na jamii ya Waafrika weusi.

Lakini, deep down Wazungu (na hasa Wamarekani Weupe) really don't give a damn thing about Black folks, and least of Africans. With that said, this whole thing is only skin-deep as far as Wazungu (na haswa Wamarekani Weupe) are concerned.

I guess what many (if not most) White Folks really expected was for Black Africans to worship and idolize Albinos born in their communities simply by virtue of their Light or White skin and as sort of quasi Europeans...

Kwani yesu si alikuwa Mzungu au vipi?????

If you are really interested in discussing not just this Albino issue but many issues involving Africa and get to the root cause of them all just check out this thread on Mashada forums. It's full of insight

http://www.mashada.com/forums/general-discussion/111757-africans-low-iq.html

Dude, we just aren't interested.

Why don't you just join like-minded racist knuckleheads who share your single-minded obsession with IQ and Race instead of always having to patronize African discussion boards?

Try of one of those thousands of White Supremacist discussion boards out there on the internet (like American Renaissance where you used to contribute before).

Bottom line is: its way easier if you hang out with similar-minded people (as far as racism and white supremacism is concerned: the choice is infinite, and I guarantee you won't ever feel disappointed.)
