Kabla hatujaanza kufanya configuration za hizo Routers / Switch ni vizuri tukajadiri ni Topology gani tutakayokuwa tunaifanyia kazi. Napendekeza tungeanzia na topology yenye routers atleast 3, Serial Linked together, halafu upande wa pili zipo connected kwenye Switch thru Ethernet, halafu computer / Servers nk zipo connected kwenye Switch. host kutoka Network "A" ikiweza kuongea na host wa Network "B" and "C" tutakuwa tumefaulu kutuma packets thru ambalo ndo lengo kubwa.
