BBC WM broadcasts to one of the biggest British Asian communities in the country. We are looking for a reporter who knows these communities well and who will bring us stories that help us better reflect British Asian life across Birmingham and the Black Country.
You will need to prove that you can develop and nurture contacts and come up with original story ideas for our main news programmes. You will be given time to use your specialist knowledge, but will also be expected to work across our newsroom rota so a good broadcasting voice, a strong journalistic background and the ability to edit audio are all essential.
The ability to speak languages from the Asian sub continent would be an advantage.

Job Purpose
Broadcast Journalists fulfill a range of duties including writing for radio, editing, reporting, news reading and producing programmes.
Reporting lines
Report to the News SBJs and through them to BBC WM's Assistant Editor.
Areas of Responsibility
To write stories, scripts, links and other material for BBC WM which is Birmingham and the Black Country's only speech based radio station.
To read voice reports and news bulletins.
To originate and offer feature ideas, suggest new angles on existing stories, and to contribute to forward planning for future programmes.
To bring BBC WM's newsroom an indepth knowledge of the area's British Asian communities and a commitment to finding stories to help the station better reflect those communities in its news programmes.
To produce live/recorded programmes, responding to breaking stories whilst on air and dealing with any unexpected technical difficulties
To work across the station in other BJ positions when needed.
To edit interviews and other recorded material as required and to operate broadcast equipment, IT and other technical equipment, portable recording equipment, self-operating OB vehicles and studio equipment
To collaborate with other output areas and departments on BBC WM, with a ‘one-station’ attitude to planning and sharing.
To be fully conversant with the legal limitations of broadcasting.
To comply with all relevant BBC Safety Rules, procedures and guidelines. To be fully aware of the Health and Safety responsibilities of this job role as stated in Radio & Music's Health and
Safety Policy.

Skills, knowledge, and experience
Proven knowledge of British Asian communities.
Knowledge of Birmingham and the Black Country.
Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a small team, under the pressures of live broadcasting and to deal effectively with contributors and members of the public.
Proven knowledge and understanding of radio production techniques including tape/digital editing and studio production skills.
An understanding of the BBC Producer Guidelines and awareness of legal considerations applying to all types of output.
Ability to write, and edit the writing of colleagues, in a concise, conversational, accurate style.
You should be able to demonstrate the following:
Sound editorial judgement.
A deep understanding of the Bristish Asian communities in Birmingham and the Black Country.
A minimum of 2 years’ practical experience in journalism.
The ability to prioritise your own work
A willingness to share ideas, skills and knowledge with other team members and learn from others.

Job Purpose
To initiate and produce, as part of a team, a wide variety of news and current affairs material for Radio and/or Television.
Key Behaviours:
- To carry out in-depth research to a broad brief, with minimal supervision across the whole range of Regional Broadcasting news and current affairs output.
- To write material for programme scripts, bulletins and links, exercising editorial judgement, maintaining professional journalistic standards and adhering to BBC policy and legal and contractual guidelines.
- To undertake interviewing and reporting duties, under broad direction in both recorded and live situations, in studio or on location, for both Radio and Television.
- To prepare and present bulletins, including assessing incoming copy, sub-editing news copy and deploying the necessary resources.
- To produce live and pre-recorded radio news and current affairs programmes and to prepare radio and TV packages under supervision.
- To originate and develop programme ideas; to assist in forward planning of material for future programmes.
- To provide briefings for reporters, camera crews and other resources staff and contributors.
- To operate broadcast equipment: in radio, portable recording equipment, self-operating outside broadcasting vehicles and studio equipment; in television, to direct camera crews on pre-recorded and live coverage, to oversee editing and operate gallery equipment.
- To liaise with and service the requirements of the network newsrooms.
- On occasions, to administer programmes budgets, ensuring effective use of money and resources, and to supervise the work of Broadcast Assistants.
- To develop and maintain local contacts and to fulfil a public relations role e.g. responding to enquiries from the public.
- At all times to carry out duties in accordance with Regional Broadcasting Health and Safety guidelines policy.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
This is the core professional level in journalism within Regional Broadcast. Journalists are employed across a range of functions and with different skills, knowledge and experience. There is staged progression through the level which is related to review of performance and the achievement of specific objectives at every stage.
- On initial recruitment, either a recognised journalistic qualification or substantial practical experience in journalism (likely to be around 3 years).
- People with a similar amount of experience in broadcast journalism may be appointed at a higher level within the salary range.
- First class news judgment.
- Good broadcasting and on-air skills where appropriate.
- Good writing skills.
- Ability to originate and develop programme stories.
- Ability to work co-operatively as part of a small team.
- Knowledge of production techniques and facilities in both Radio and Television and the ability to develop Multi-Media production skills.
- An understanding of the BBC’s Producer Guidelines and awareness of legal considerations applying to all types of output.
