Attack on British and Swiss tourists in Kenya

Nov 04, 2011The driver of a tourist vehicle was killed, and a Swiss and a British tourist were injured in northern Kenya on Friday. The vehicle was on its way to Shaba National Reserve.
"One of the tourists was shot. The vehicle rolled, and his colleague sustained injuries," Eastern Province Police Commander Marcus Ochola told the Reuters news agency.
The attack took place north of Isiolo in an area with several game reserves that is also known for banditry. It is also in an area where there have been frequent deadly clashes between pastoralists over scarce resources this year.
Isiolo is where the tarmac road ends and the frontier town marks the start of Kenya's northeastern area of desert scrub, mountains, and Lake Turkana.
This is the last place you will find bank or petrol (except for at the Samburu Lodge), before Maralal or Marsabit. The area north is home to the Samburu, Rendille, Boran, and Turkana people. The town has a large Somali population after ex-Somali soldiers were resettled here after the First World War.
It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack.
The bandits are understood to be from a neighboring community. The attack happened in an area heavily guarded by armed police officers.
This incident is not related to the recent fighting between the pastoralists around Samburu, it was reported.
