Tanzania has always played the laggard in the integration of the east Africa common Market bloc. Yet she is a beneficiary of the creation of the trading bloc. The expansion of the bloc to include Rwanda and Burundi has pushed Tanzania the investment destination ranks.

The proposed integration of the three trading blocs in Africa into one large FTA will make Tanzania completely irrelevant to Kenyan investors in the manufacturing sector.

There is some truth in what you are saying. However, I blame the Tanzanian business people who are afraid to venture out. Instead of the big shots of Tanzania moving forward to compete with their counterparts from the region, they are busy advising their Govt not to allow competition. Take as an example, NMB bank earns more than Equity bank and KCB in profit as of two years ago but they have refused to open even one branch outside Tanzania. The same applies to CRDB. So they sit back and wait for the govt to fight for them when competition comes.

Exim bank has run to open a branch in Djibouti and totally ignored the region. Tanzania has very wealthy businessmen and industrialists capable of any investment but unfortunately they are too scared of the loud mouths of Kenyans and they have refused to venture out. No matter what is said about East Africa the competition will always be between Tanzania and Kenya. Right now Kenya is doing better and Tanzania needs to re-think its strategy for East Africa. I urge the Tanzania business men not to be afraid to venture out. How come the second hand clothes sellers from Tanzania have completely dominated the second hand clothes business in kikomba.

Why are the big boys afraid? Tanzania has every advantage over Kenya but somehow it is stalling going into the economic battleground. Tanzania has big arable land and unable to compete with Kenyans in Horticulture and flower exports. Tanzania has better tourist attractions but unable to take over from Kenya as the key tourist entry point.

Tanzania can easily become the super power of East Africa but not yet.
