NMB Annual General Meeting: Shareholders approve TZS 25 billion total dividend
On Saturday 2nd June 2012, NMB held its Annual General Meeting at Mlimani City, Conference Centre. This was the 4th NMB AGM since the bank was listed on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange in 2008. The year 2011 has been another notable year for National Microfinance Bank plc (NMB), producing good financial results and continuing in its strategy to provide affordable banking services to the Tanzanian population, in rural as well as in urban areas, and to key segments of the economy.NMB CEO, Mr. Mark Wiessing, made a presentation on the progress NMB has made in 2011.
He said ‘’ In the course of 2011, we have further developed our ability to deliver financial services to chosen wholesale and retail customer segments, through a broad mix of lending, liquidity and transactional solutions delivered through a variety of ‘’bricks and mortar’’ branches and “electronic channels’’ .
NMB branch network of 141 branches continues to be the dominant network among banks in Tanzania, fulfilling a key role in empowering local communities, and thus having significant but often forgotten economic impact, especially in those previously unbanked communities and districts.NMB is present in 95% of districts in Tanzania. In 2011, NMB Grew the branch network to over 141 branches, ATM cards with now over 1.4 million cards in circulation, the growth of the customer base to over 1.7 million customers.
The ATM network grew to 450 ATM machines nationwide, and NMB Mobile reached over 600,000 active accounts. Apart from its core business, NMB places a great importance to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), In the recent years NMB has taken its CSR role seriously and has endeavoured to contribute 1% of the bank’s profit after tax to worthy causes in the communities. Few weeks ago, NMB launched Financial Literacy program for primary schools branded ‘’NMB Financial Fitness’’.
The CEO also clarified that the bank operated in a favorable economic environment, with GDP for 2011 growing at around 6%, on other hand inflation climbed to reach double digit by the end of 2011. In the money markets Treasury Bill and Treasury Bond, rates remained on the high side.
Despite the adverse impact of increase in domestic inflation combined with number of other factors such as load shedding, the bank’s Profit Before Tax (PBT) has grown to TZS 102 billion, and its Profit after Tax (PAT) reached TZS 72 billionStrong loans and advances, and transactional volumes growth, were the main contributors to these results, as also evidenced by the following key financials;
- Total income up by 33% to TZS 267 billion
- Net interest income grew by 42% on the back of strong loans growth and increased money market rates towards year end 2011
- Non-interest income grew 16 % representing an increasingly large percentage, at 32% of total income
- Total cost grew by 27% and remained below total income growth rates, thus resulting in continued low cost to income ratio of about 57%
- Strong growth in loans and advances to the private sector (loan portfolio up by 31% to TZS 1.1 Trillion)
- The loan to deposit ratio has accordingly grown to 62%, indicating continued scope for growth
- The NPL ratio remains at acceptable levels at 2%
- The banks Return on Equity stands at a commendable 25%
According to the CEO, the bank will continue its ongoing efforts to further improve customer service through all its channels, while continuing to control costs and manage credit and other risks.On his part the outgoing NMB Board Chairman Mr. Misheck Ngatunga said ‘’ during the last nine years, NMB has developed significantly.
I have watched it evolve from an institution with a limited mandate to become a full-fledged commercial bank, leading the market in many areas, and making a significant contribution to the Tanzanian economy and country’s tax revenues’’NMB’s earning per share improved from TZS 108 million to TZS 144 million. Accordingly the Annual General Meeting approved a dividend of TZS 50 per share, or a total amount of TZS 25 billion.
In addition, the AGM approved the appointment of Professor Joseph Semboja as the incoming non-executive director nominated by the Government of Tanzania, in replacement of outgoing Board Chairman Mr. Misheck Ngatunga, who served the bank for the last 9 years.
Furthermore, the AGM approved the appointment of Mrs Anne Mbuguni, to fill one of the vacancies on the bank’s board of Directors.
