HEADLINE: CCM magnates in the media

The treasurer of the Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and advisor to the government party on economic and financial issues, the businessman and MP Rostam Aziz has recently acquired a significant stake in the largest press company in the country, Habari Corporation Ltd (HCL).

And yet he is not a newcomer in the Tanzanian press sector, since during the 1990s he had launched the company Mwananchi Communications Ltd (MCL) in partnership with Ferdinand Ruhinda, a former ambassador turned businessman and close ally to former President Benjamin Mkapa.

Aziz and Ruhinda subsequently joined forces with the Aga Khan's Nation Media Group to launch a daily English language newspaper, The Citizen.

They later disagreed with their Kenyan partners over the coverage of Jikaya Kikwete's election campaign last year. A few months ago Aziz therefore sold a large proportion of his shares in MCL and purchased the stakes held by several journalists (Salva Rweyemamu, Jenerali Ulimwengu and William Shoo) in HCL. Since then this press group which was quite virulent under the previous regime has calmed down considerably with the present government. Other CCM dignitaries also have interests in the media. This is so in the case of Minister of Livestock, Anthony Diallo the owner of Sahara Communications Ltd which operates Star Television and Radio Free Africa as well as publishing the weekly magazine Msanii Afrika.

For its part, the IPP Media group (The Guardian Ltd, Media Solutions Ltd, Independent Television and Radio One Ltd) owned by the magnate Reginald Mengi has always been able to butter up successive governments. However, today he is in the line of sight of several CCM executives due to some of his news stories.
